Ok, here's another stupid question... Just bought a new gun a few weeks ago, got the registration the other day. Maybe I missed something, but I don't recall paying any fee at time of purchase. I wonder why not? I have to pay to register my car.
Notwithstanding what the Liberals would have had us believe when they passed the legislation which created the long gun registry, the requirement to register our guns is not the same as the requirement to register our vehicles or the requirement to buy a dog licence. For example, failure to register your car or licence your dog will not get you a criminal record and a jail sentence.
To answer your question as to why you didn't have to pay a fee to register your gun you can thank the conservatives for that. Those fees were were cancelled after the last federal election.

Default Legality

Dont,t want to be a wrench in the machinery here , but l believe a petition is only acceptable and legal if the names are handsigned with pen .
Might be something to check.
Filling out a type written document with type written names may not get to the table even though we all mean good , just another legal quirk.

The Conservatives are committed to doing this but there is no point in trying until they have a majority government. Sure doesn't hurt to remind your MP etc but lets try and avoid high exposure to the general public. If you want to help join and support the federal Conservative party, the gun registry will meet its demise!

I went in to buy a box of bullets the other day in Wholesale. An American hunter in front of me wasn't required to produce even a piece of ID. All he had to say was "I'm American" and put down the greenbacks. I was next and had to produce not only my driver's license but also my PAL (of course). How the hell is this keeping us safe?? Let's do away with the registry and put some of this money towards meaningful gun education for minors and new gun owners.

Exclamation Petition

Signed off on it, but am still shaking my head over the whole thing. Now that the election`s over and we have yet another minority Conservative Gov`t in power(snicker at power), I ask the following: Does anyone really think they`ll actually MAN UP AND DO WHAT THEY SAY. I recall a pamphlet circulated by the Conservative MP for my riding saying ``We`re Scrapping the Registry``This tune has been heard before, like in the LAST federal election, but no action taken that has had the quoted effect. It has been a major plank in the platform, but they haven`t really stood firm on it.High hopes for this to happen prior tothe next election, but who knows.

a decision has been taken some time ago to cancel the registration... quote from the cfc website:
"The Government has announced its intention to simplify licence requirements for firearm owners and to remove the requirement to register non-restricted firearms. However, any changes to the Firearms Act must go through a legislative process and pass in Parliament. This will take time. "

it's only a matter of time, and i don't think the petition is necessary nor will it make things faster...

plus we're not paying anything for registering... it ain't any hassle to register a gun be it new or bought from a person that never registered... so why is everyone against it so much... let it take its time and it'll vanish...

True, we aren't paying to register the firearms when we buy them. But it's our tax dollars that are keeping the gun registry going. The longer we sit back and let a pointless program like this continue the more money will be sunk into the registry instead of somewhere it could do some real good.

I am eager for the day the long gun registry is scraped but considering that the NDP and Liberals want to ban handguns I don't foresee this happening until there is a Conservative majority...and I don't foresee this either... Who besides the Conservatives will ever vote in support of ending the registry?!?

Would anyone happen to know the first country to enforce this type of law?

This year will go down in history! For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!
- Adolf Hitler

Hitler later used this to his advantage to see which home had a gun and which ones didnt. I believe it is an invasion of privacy as well as taking away protection from so many homes. I believe that if you are a criminal with a record of being violent or using weapons to commit crime then by all means you shouldnt own a gun. I cant protect my home because i dont have my FAC, and if i did I would not register my firearm. Its something I strongly believe in. If someone wants to kill, they will find a way to do it, restrictions on rifles doesnt stop some nut job from killing another human being. I went to school with a kid named jeremy steinkey. he didnt have to use a gun, nor did his girlfriend to kill an innocent family.
sure it might be a minor inconvienance but you have to think about the possible consequences that can go with registering your firearm. what if we go to war for some stupid reason? the government knows who hunts, and who can point a rifle the right way. its highly unlikely, but so was 2 airplanes hitting the twin towers.

not trying to scare anyone, nor am i trying to say that the same thing could happen to canada. just a thing to ponder on

Default Gun values

I realize I'm probably in the wrong place here but I just wanted to ask somebody- or everybody what a couple guns may be worth.
