So i want to get my first gun. I'm thinking of getting a 22 250, but my question is, can i shoot a rabbit and still have something left to eat?

What are you shooting? if it is just rabbits go get a 17 or a 22 long rifle. If you are going to shoot coyotes as well sure why not just shoot them in the head with a light bullet.

I say get a 17hmr or a 22lr 10-22 or a good bolt action 22lr. Practice and enjoy shooting something cheaper for the first while as you gain confidence. Put some decent glass on it and you will enjoy it even more. Down the road buy a 22-250 or 223 when you can afford to spend $1.00 a bang and are confident you will hit what you are aiming at.

The 22WMR IMHO is a better rabbit round. It doesn't blow em up as bad. The 17HMR will work better if you use the 20gr bullets. Head shots are the way to go with the HMR. The 223 would be an excellent all around gun for critters up to coyotes. Head shots would be optional with the right bullet. Like maybe a HP. The upside to the 223 is the availability of ammo & the wide assortment on the shelves.

In my opinion 22lr is the way to go for a first rifle, go and shoot the thing all day everyday and just get used to shooting for dirt cheap. 22 is fine for rabbits, grouse, every shooters favorite entertainment gophers, and if you are a good shot coyotes as well (definitely only go for the head shots).

that way you get lots of practice and have absolutely no problem justifying a your next gun purchase cause you've gotta have something bigger then just a 22

I shoot a Rem 700 in .223. Its a great cartridge. Its decimates gophers, and is great on coyotes. It's easy to load for, and not that expensive to shoot. I love my 22 and 17hmr, but barley touchem now that I got the 223. Its a very managable cartridge, be a great first gun I think.
