Retired RCMP revolver
My grandfather served in the RCMP for over 30 years, retired back in the 80s and passed away early 2000s. My questions are:
1) When you retire from the RCMP, do you have to turn in your service revolver?
2) If you do have to turn them in, what does the RCMP do with them?
3) What use would the RCMP have of an old .38 special?
4) Any way of tracking down his old revolver?
Thanks

If it was turned in it is part of someone's cast iron fry pan . They were put in a sealed container and accompanied by the NCO of the armoury to the iron foundry and tossed into the blast furnace

If the firearm was in good condition when your grandfather retired it may have been re issued to another member. Since that time The RCMP have replaced the SW revolver with Semi autos. As mentioned all those revolvers may have been put in the furnace.
Some other Police Departments that replaced their revolvers accepted bids and sold them.

RCMP uses Smith and Wesson 5946 now, and as others have said, the old revolvers have mostly been melted down. I have hear that there are some that have survived, but you'd be hard pressed to find them.
Some forces like Victoria and Delta PD gave their members the option of buying their old pistols back from the force when they upgraded, however that will never happen with the RCMP as their current pistol is Prohibited..plus, Federal government.

Actually a large number of them went to Federal Corrections. Not sure if CSC uses a pistol now on escorts, but they used the revolvers up until at least 2002.
