Default Shot 7mm-08 for first time today

I took my new browning abolt 3 hunter in 7mm-08 to the range today. What a difference in recoil from even my 30-06 and my 270. A lot less. Now to find a load the gun likes.

Glad to hear Gregg.

What ammunition did you try.

I tried the 140 Remington corlocks. They seemed fine at the start. Over a inch though. When the barrel heated up groups got much worse.

Nice caliber . I have never owned one myself but have built some for others and shot some . Great ballistics out of that case . I chronographed 140 grain factory at 2850fps. Have also built some 7-08 Ackley improved .

I bought one for my daughters last summer, a Savage Youth Axis with the spider webbing on the stock. Shoots a variety of ammo very well. The biggest problem was that with the 20" barrel, shortened LOP, and a short action it was 3.5" shorter than all of my hunting rifles and I found it just so handy for backpacking trips into the mountains. So when the girls came out with me I had to let them pack it, I think I love that little rifle. May have get one for myself in a quality make, still the compact though.

One of my all time favourites. I have owned several over the years and they are typically fairly easy to work up decent loads for.

I owned one years ago and 2 of my kids use them. Great caliber, not finicky and very accurate.

Never owned one, but shot my partner's in as a backup camp gun a couple years back. Really nice to shoot, grouped best with anything 140 grain. If I ever find an excuse....

And realize that it is the only cartridge/calibre in a rifle you'll ever need but it's always nice to have more too.

Glad you like it. Picked up my first ever 7-08 couple weeks ago as well and finally got to shooting it on the weekend, no wind . Mine is in a browning bar shorttrac, and yes the lack of recoil in this gun is great. Think I could shoot as much as I ever wanted and never get a sore shoulder. I ran 3 different factory loads through mine, hornady whitetail 139's, hornady superformance 140's, and federal fusion 140's, and the fusions got me my best group at about 1.25" at 100yds. That's with a 4x scope so I wasn't complaining

I walked into the grocery store the other day and found this bread that was already sliced. OMG, what will they think of next? I'm gonna list my bread slicer on Kijiji.

Although gitrdun has chosen a most hilarious analogy here. You guys must remember that the 7mm-08 was first introduced as a factory loaded cartridge in 1980(37 yrs ago) and can trace its linkage back as far as the mid to late 1950's as a wildcat cartridge.
The revelation as to it being the next greatest newest wonder cartridge is far from having any founding......

BTW, the 7-08 really doesn't do anything that the ubiquitous 7x57 doesn't, and the 7x57's often lauded reputation over 4 continents as a game getter.

My Sako 85 SS 7-08 (22" barrel) is my favourite rifle. It shoots a bunch of different hand loads well but this is what I use for hunting:

The fps should read 2905.

Except better fit a short action.

One of the better calibers available for the recoil conscious.

10-4 on it being a great cartridge for the recoil concious, or sensitive folks.

Started both my children on this very cartridge 120gr. SP's and a start load of 4064 was awesome fodder for them to get used to the rifle while practicing.

I simple dropped a 130gr Speer BT on top of the same powder charge and watched the deer drop anywhere from 80yds to 250yds.

Tolerable recoil for most shooters and enough power for most hunting tasks.

I will second Dick 284 experience, since I relied on it after he posted the success his kids experienced. I bought an NEF youth model in 7-08 same as Dicks. My son was 10, after a frank discussion he told me he was afraid of the sound. I doubled up on the ear protection and loaded 40 rounds with Trail Boss and the 130 gr Speer cup and core.I believed in them as they have always shot and performed for me. After promising he could quit if it was not comfortable he took his first shot. Went threw all 40 that day and any trip to the range with less after that day always ended in disappointment. At 11 he moved up to reduced loads using H4895 and the reduced loads as per the Hogdon website.
Handled them without issue although the speers did not shoot well at this velocity. Tried some TTSX with the same load and have never looked back.
He is not a flashy kid wanting the latest for everything. He is 16 , taller with a longer length of pull than I. I thought he would jump at the chance when I suggested we get him a new rifle to better accommodate him. Nope only wants to add Spacers to fix the length of pull and stick with his rifle. All the confidence in the world with his 7-08 and the kid can shoot.
Shooting the trail Boss made him completely comfortable and recoil has never been an issue with increased loads. With the increased length of pull I look forward to getting out with it myself. 7-08 has always been a favorite of mine. I suppose I should thank Dick 284 for leading the way.
