Default Question about registering a gun.

I bought a gun from a fellow board member. I have completed the confirmation by phone. But the lady who i was talking to from the RCMP says I cannot take the gun out of the house until I recieve the documents by mail. Is this true?? Will I have to wait to shoot it until I get the regs from the rcmp? Thanks

My first question is "Restricted or non-restricted?"

Well, let me start, then the informed posters can chime in.

You have a PAL (I'm assuming), the gun is registered. So you go out and get stopped and have no registration to show. But isn't there an amnesty on right now? You don't have to have it (or even have the gun registered).

I'd listen to the advice the CFC gave you. Would you end up being charges? Very unlikely but it could you find yourself in the middle of a big hassle....unlikely but possibly.

You would think that if they gave you confirmation, that they could fax you a temporary copy like you get when you buy new?

here we go again about the Amnesty.....It DOES NOT mean you don't have to register your guns, all it means is that you can register them with out being charged for failing to do so prior to the law coming into effect, it is still essentially a crime to have an unregistered gun

She should have given you the new registration #.
If it was me and it was unrestrticted, i wouldn't hesitate to use it. but that's only me.
When you buy a gun from a dealer, your allowed to use it right away.

And we are probably both going down the wrong path on this anyway. The gun is legally registered. If there is a charge for failing to provide proof of registration when asked to by a law enforcement official I guess THAT is what he would get charged with. Sort of like having a drivers licence, just not having it on you. Minor charge I would imagine.

Good question. I've found this stated on the RCMP web site somewhere but have been unable to locate the requirement for this in the firearms ACT anywhere. Not sure if this is actually law, or if it's simply the RCMPs policy and interpretation of the legislation. The RCMP have been known to intrepret legislation to their own benefit and agenda.

Assuming it's not restricted, I would think that if you had a copy of the bill of sale plus a photocopy of the original registration (from whom you've bought the gun) with something written on it such as "sold to....." and the confirmation number that is given to you by the CFO people who do the transfer, you should be good to at least get the gun home... but that's just my 2¢ worth, you are the one taking the risk. If they've already spoken to you about this and told you no, then it is very possible that there is a record of this conversation. I'd follow their advise.

On the more paranoid your house and phone line are probably being monitored. They are just waiting for you to make your move so they can confiscate a gun from a hardened criminal.

Off topic a bit, if this was their only gun and they only had a POL, then they would be in illegal posession of the gun, as the POL expires as soon as the registration is tranfered.

This is a good example of what makes the gun registry 100% useless. Surely for 2 billion + dollars the police should be able to take a person's PAL and determine which firearms are registered to the license holder. I thought that was why the police (some) are in favour if keeping this useless lieberal program.

Interesting enough I get a letter from them a week later saying the buyer can now take possession of the rifle, but no registration when I am the buyer. Just a letter and registration to follow.

I think he can just go shooting. Its registered and if anyone is interested, and I doubt they will be they can look it up on CPIC.

If you want to walk about "What ifs", well you can do that all day.

I'm the sell by the way.
