Fuel consumption 60 hp out board

92 2 stroke vs newer 4 stroke. Is it worth getting newer.

Technology has changed so much in the past 31 years I have to imagine fuel consumption would be significantly better with a new 4 banger vs the old 2 stroke. I have a 86 25HP Johnson and I get horrible fuel economy. For putting around smaller lakes it's not bad, but I wouldn't get very far on a large lake.

I'd go with the newer 4 stroke but not because of the fuel economy.

The newer engine is definitely going to get better fuel economy but if you are fishing you might not burn enough fuel in day to make a real difference. If you are pulling a tube or skiers for any length of time that would be another story.

There are advantages to the modern 4 stroke that I would consider to be more important when comparing it to a 3 decades old 2 stoke.

-reliability
-parts availability
-lack of odor when compared to 2 stroke exhaust
-smoother idle and improved ability to troll at low speeds

Odor??? 2-stroke exhaust triggers so many good memories. It smells wonderful to me like fresh baked bread or freshly brewed coffee. The old 9.9 Johnson or Lawn Boy mower or the Husky chainsaw. They all had their own slightly unique scent.

Ya fuel economy was horrible no doubt. I’m not so certain on larger HP outboards but bro-in-law’s 20HP Yammy is crazy efficient compared to the old 9.9 Johnson. Like 5L vs 20L difference in fuel burnt during the same weekend going the same distance. But the Yammy doesn’t smell as good.

The reason I ask is that I Googled it and the consensus seems to be it makes no difference. This is counter to what I found going from 2 to 4 stroke in a twenty hp. Gas consumption was significantly less with the 4 stroke, like 70% less. I used to use almost 4 gallons in a typical day, with the 4 stroke I can make 3 trips on 4 gallons.

I don't have anything to compare to except previous inboards, so that won't help. But I do have a 2018 60HP on my Starcraft 166 DC. It's very quiet, real easy maintenance, runs great. As for fuel, that's one thing I don't even think about. It does have a 40L tank, but I dump in a jerry can here and there. I guess depends what you're doing with it, but in general it sips the fuel.
If I remember correctly, using my Vessel View.........nice cruise speed of 25 mph, 4500ish rpm the burn rate was 10L/hr.

My 2022 Mercury 90, uses a great deal less fuel, than the old Johnson 85 that we had on a smaller boat. I would estimate that the 90 burns at most, half of the fuel, as the old 85.

Most likely what you are looking at also has fuel injection.

Chokes are pretty well old school. Only seem to be on the small out boards 9.9 and under. Easy start with the fuel inject just like you truck. Quieter and better on gas

My 150 Evinrude 2 stroke burnt about twice as my 150 4 stroke merc but was way faster. And noiseyer

My favorite boat is a 16.5 alluminum with a 70 hp 2 stroke johnny. 2 hp kicker for trolling. It'll burn a 25 liter tank in a day. I always bring an extra 10 liters mixed. Rarely have to use it but she likes her fuel. But fast reliable, runs like a top. I've got a big fiberglass 4 stroke I thought i would need on the lakes I fish in saskie that I never use. The 70 johnny is a great motor I did delete the v.r.o injection, it would flood the carbs with oil, tank mix at 50 to one with w3 and go fish anywhere.
