Default Dermestid Beetle Service

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone knew of somebody private or that runs a taxidermy that can clean an elk skull I got with dermestid beetles located around Calgary. I would try it myself but for my first time I don't want it to be on the beautiful elk I harvested.

Thanks!

If your up for a little drive, I would highly recommend Les Parkin. He's up in Red Deer but he is very accommodating and does amazing work with beetles. I recently got a mule deer back from him and it looks amazing. His email is lparkin@live.ca He had a beautiful elk euro with him when I picked up the mule deer.

You can order a small colony of beetles off the internet and do it yourself. Get a couple buddies, tell a few more buddies, charge 20 bucks, you're set for a new side business. All you need is a container, a heat lamp, and an inline thermostat....... and a very understanding spouse

Andy at hillbillies taxidermy in Bowden has done a bunch for me. I've been very happy with his work.

I would look at getting a colony myself but I can't since I live in a town house. I saw on here a month or so back that there was a lady that had beetles. Does anyone know her name?

Yes if bow zone area isn't too big a stretch travel wise. Hopefully you left lots of meat on the skull and didn't degrease or boil at all

You DONT need a taxidermy license to do euro skulls for other people... i just went through this with the fish and wildlife office in Calgary.
I bought some dermestid beetles for doing my own skull and I’m going to be offering euro mounts to friends, family and whoever else - for a fee. So to make sure it was all legit, i applied for the permit, the officers came out for the mandatory inspection of the premises and gave me all the requirements for a taxidermy license. Skull preservation does NOT require a taxidermy license - preserving hides and skins and mounting said hides and skins DOES. but because a guy had a found dead wildlife permit for a mule buck in velvet and wanted me to euro it, i needed a taxidermy license to preserve the velvet. So i went through the process and got the license specifically for that purpose.

Anyway, OP - if you’re still looking for dermestid beetle cleaning, let me know. I’m in airdrie.

Bad Azz beetles in Lake Isle
Afterlife Artistics in Sherwood park

Both of them do it, somewhat in the Edmonton area.

Pretty strange regulations, eh?
Definitely backwards....

It is perfectly legal to sell, trade, give away, import/export, work on ungulate hides, velvet, raw or tanned without a permit as it is not considered wildlife, and you have been told you need a taxidermy permit.

It is illegal to be in possession, sell, trade non-exuviated antlers/horns, or ungulate bones, hooves without a permit or licence, because it is considered wildlife yet they say you don't need a taxidermy licence.

Anyone doing and USING this service without a taxidermy licence should be anal about keeping written records proving why you have possession of someone else's wildlife (and vise versa), names and numbers, hunting licences.

The screwed up wording of these regulations leave anyone without a taxidermy permit, and those using their service, in a precarious place.

Default Dermestid Beetle Service

Fehrview taxidermy out of aldersyde, between okotoks and high river. Did my wife’s moose couple years ago. Very well done and price was very good. Think you can find Kim on facebook under Fehrview taxidermy or pm me and I’ll send you a pic of her business card.
