If you're not using a firearm then you sure can!

If you are in direct and immediate control Of someone over the age of 18 with a valid PAL you can hunt using a firearm.

A PAL is federal, not provincial, so it's no different in Alberta, than in any other province or territory.

I always have mine with me, never been asked to show it when being checked though.

I have had to show mine to the RCMP in two different combined RCMP/F&W checkstops.

Understanding that under section 92 of the Criminal Code of Canada it is illegal to knowingly posses a firearm in Canada unless you have a valid licence to do so.(yes that’s paraphrased)

So if you’ve got firearms and no valid licence, asking about things like this on an open forum, which is known to be observed by law enforcement types, isn’t one of life’s brighter moments.

But I get it, you’re asking for a friend, or you’ve seen something that you don’t really understand..........

As others have stated if you are under the direct and immediate control of someone who has a valid firearms licence, or if you are hunting with a bow, crossbow, or sling shot, you don’t need a valid firearms licence to hunt in Alberta.

Hunting solo can be a very rewarding experience. Give it a shot.

Yes.

Go with a friend who has a PAL and a firearm to lend.

Or bow hunt.

Welcome & have fun!
