Default getting into Spey :)

so I bought a 12' 3wt angler's roost (I like light stuff and it'll mostly be used for cutthroat rivers I figure), picked up some SA Skagit line on sale from fish tales and a good deal on an amundson TCR reel.

this should be interesting

if the 3wt works out I might build a 5 or 6 to chuck bigger streamers. And if it doesn't, I still will haha.

on another note I also bought a fiberglass blank from anglers roost, then on my next trip to Fish Tales I noticed that they carry blue halo blanks there 0.0

How do you like the quality of blanks?
Is fiberglass blank with spigot or put over connection?

Would really appreciate if you gave us a mini review.

The blanks both seem great for the price, but I haven't even started building yet so I can't give much of a review.

the ferrules on the fiberglass are spigot, it's a 7' 4wt 3 piece.

both blanks came with rod socks, which is great considering the price of them. I also ordered a gorgeous wood burl fighting butt/reel seat from angler's roost which was a steal of a deal IMO, I'm excited to put these together and fish them!

just for the record I'm putting single foot guides on the 12' to keep the weight and wrapping time down, and I think I'll put a carbon fiber grip on the glass. I'll post some pics when I'm done the rods, and maybe some during the process for some mid-winter teasing.

Thanks Flieguy!

I almost purchased 3 wt glass from roost but for some reason decided on old English blank. Can't complain, but I always wondered about roost blanks.

Maybe when you complete your build we could meet and compare rods.

my teacher warned me about people like you on the internet

I'm interested how both rods will turn out because of the price of the blanks... Hopefully it won't bite me

I was skeptical when I built mine, but it turned out to be better than most rods I own. For roughly 80$ all in and one afternoon I'm super happy with it.

I have a 8 weight 10' grey single hand
8 weight 11' beluah switch rod
And a 8 weight 12.4' loop Spey
They all have there uses and like them differently
I use both skadit and scandy heads
For alberta I would look at were your fishing
Spey on the bow yes not on the livinston
I would go to a 5-6 weight

Holy Smokes:

A 12 foot 3wt Spey. WOW.

Please tell us how it works.

What kind of water are you going to use it on?

Thanks.

That is cool.

I was wondering if a setup like yours have might also be used for some float fishing.

I have to check out a set up like yours.

Thanks for the post.

Cheers.

I think you're going to find that a 12' Spey with either Skagit or Scandi is simply just too much rod for smaller streams,ie;the Liv or similar size flows.Considering that optimally to load your rod with either aproperly matched Scandi or Skagit head, the entire head needs to be outside of your rod tip or reasonably close to same, normally with a slight overhang of running line.So for a Skagit/Scandi 3 wt,your looking at probably 22-30' of head respectively.....add another 10-15' for tip/leader or just leader for Scandi....plus 12' rod length.....your looking at 50ish feet give or take from your feet to fly without shooting an inch of running line...meaning you'll need to be standing 50' upstream from any run or lie that you target.Sure you can choke up on the line and just dangle downstream what you need, but what's the point of using Spey outfit on such small streams when a SH rod is the far superior tool for the job?
Don't get me wrong, not trying to discourage you from 2H gear,I actually love using my spey rods where and when appropriate, but small flows and short game is not the place for them, you'll never get your head beyond the rod tip.I can fish smaller cutty/Brookie streams far more effectively and enjoyably with SH gear roll casting 20-50',and reserve the 2H stuff for larger rivers where casts are likely to be more between 50-100+ feet.

Fly Fishing Expo is coming up on the 23rd of this month, bring your rod along and I'm sure someone can help you set it up with a line that will work, I think Vision will be there and they have some great light rod spey lines available (Vibe 65 is a nice line).
