Hope the boss doesn't see this as I took 10 minutes off work to play..... this time with a 308 Win tack driver. Pretty good gusts from behind, but the story best told with pictures.

Looks fancy. Probably barnard and Krieger.

As hard as it is to believe, it is real tough to drive tacks with a club (at least for me). Yes Barnard and either a Krieger or Bartlein ...getting them a bit mixed up) ... chambered by Henry Rempel.

Very nice shooting 260 Rem. It takes me 10 minutes after I get back from setting up the target just to get my heart rate low enough to shoot .......

darren...did that Cooper show up yet? The Model 22 has an excellent action. I have one in 260 Rem that shoots well (a potential tack driver ).
tikka250... I was in Nanaimo May 7-14 and got a tour of their Range.

Busy for me too, but at least my "busy" all takes place at the Range. Think I'll try some tacks with rim fire ... those little gophers take a bit more practice. Great forecast for the weekend, which can be best enjoyed with a bit of trigger time ... with or without tacks.

Your a lucky man 260! I was actually working on a 200m range last weekend (I only have 100m now) which meant no trigger time for me but it was still a lot of fun!!! Not done but getting there ......

Forecast does look great! Good luck with the rim fire!

Default Tack driver challenge

Today, took a .22 LR rim fire to zero and try on.some tacks at 50m. I was a bit rusty at reading wind, and barely made the cut ...but this one qualifies as a "tack driver".

Hard to believe that a month has slipped by since the OP. I had to shoot some brass to get ready for the Reloading Demo on Sunday, so put five rounds into paper ... and the added the tacks. This is 308 Win at 100M. Looks like I squeezed in five for five. Could be a decent weekend for shooting. Make the wind your friend.

Darren -- Keep at it. Remember this is not a competition, it is just about getting out to test your rig, your loading, and your hold ... and of course, drive some tacks. I have an advantage not enjoyed by most shooters because my part-time job takes me to the Range frequently so I get to practice a lot. Challenging myself with five shot groups rather than three, makes shooting strings of five just "normal", so five for five on tacks is not intimidating. If I measured the tack group above, it is about 0.3"C to C .

Darren- looks like the 6BR wants to shoot. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out how the rifle likes to be held. Just keep tinkering and you'll see some ragged one holers...then, tacks beware! I only had one 6BR so my experience is limited. Mine was a sporter with a skinny barrel, but it had no trouble holding 1/2MOA. With 8 twist, I settled on Berger 105's pushed by 30.0 gr Varget lit by CCI BR-4's.

Thanks 260rem. Everywhere I have searched it seems like 30.0 gr varget is the ticket. This one seems to like closer to 28.0 gr varget with the 107 gr sierras running around 2650 FPS. I have been using CCI 450's but do have some BR4's to try. But like you say, I have some tinkering to do. Thanks again for the challenge.

I have some benchmark .... do you think that would be worth a try or do you think it is too fast for the 107's?

Default Winchester 69A

I finally got to the range to check my 69A and sight in a Savage 3BS and 5S today. The Savages have factory peep sights and both shot sub 1/2" groups, with Remington Cyclones, at 25 yards. They would likely be tack drivers in the hands of someone with young eyes but not mine. The 69A has a Leupold rim fire scope and proved to be a tack driver as I shot a group that fit under a tack and as this target.

I forgot my camera so don't have a picture of the rifle.

Shot at 25 yards. Wasn't properly set up for 50 yard target but did get 5 shots into 0.6", with the Lapua Master Match at a 50 yard target. One out of the group but 4 that fit under a tack. I should have fired a fouler as it seems that the first shot, after changing ammo brands, is a bit out of the group. I am out of the Lapua ammo so will have to find some more for the 50 yard challenge.

Default Links to Tack Driving Range Game Targets

Here is a link to the targets I used if anyone is interested. It appears that both the 25 & 50 range targets are the same. The outside of the circles on a printed target are slightly smaller than the thumb tacks I got from Staples.
