6.5x284 Norma real world barrel life
In a hunting rifle, after say 200rds of load development, then mostly just yotes and deer, say maybe 50-100rds a year tops, what would the barrel life expectancy be? I've read 1000-1500rds but I suspect that's mostly from a bench rest perspective. Would it have that much less of a barrel life than a 270, 243, or a 7mag?

You will be old and gray before you wear the barrel out.

It really depends on how fast you push them. My last 6.5-284 was a pacnor. I was shooting 140 bergers at 3050. At 600 rounds the first 2" of barrel was shot and groups were almost an inch. The new barrel is a kreiger and i have backed them off to about 2980. Hoping to get at least 1200 rounds out of this barrel.

Group size is the biggest reason we rebarrel and rechambered for sure
In reality though , it is not that big a deal if you think about it .
If your groups were almost an inch you would not see any difference in a big game animal out to 500 meters or even further , unless you were shooting targets with it on a regular basis off a bench .

My 6.5-284 has never shot an animal and never will. At 18 lbs its just too heavy to pack. It sure is fun shooting steel at a 1000+ yards though. I have thought about building a light weight 6.5-284 for hunting. Its a great cartridge.

What is your coal?
Aside from barrel life, a bigger fear I have with this build is my mag box is 3", I'm limited to 3" or more likely 2.975 coal's.

I'm not sure what the chamber is throated for, I think he has a couple different reamers for his 6.5x284's.
So long as I can use the factory HSM 140gr burgers I'll be happy, I just need to find out what the coal is on that factory ammo. I'm tempted to bring my calipers into the store and measure one.

One thing nice about the 6.5-284 is its so easy to load for. H4350, H4831, H1000 and R22 all work well. I get the lease amount of es from H4350 and R22.

I'm not sure but I don't think I'll be able to stretch them out quite that far and still fit them in my magazine.

The Berger match hybrid arent nearly as sensitive to seating depth as the vld.

I use the match hybrid target in my 7 LRM. In 6.5cal for hunting bullets there is the 140 vld hunting, 135 classic hunter and 140 elite hunter.

Suggest you roll some 140gr SMK.
They are very accurate and shockingly easy to develop.
I have to get really silly behind the trigger not to shoot half inch groups. Rifle is a Cooper 52 6.5-06.
My rifle preferred these over the 142 SMK, Berger hybrid, and Amax.

Im not shooting a 6.5-284. Not sure if you noticed i was refering to 6.5-06, but since they are so similar I thought I would suggest it.
If you still want to know the COL of the 6.5-06 i'll look ot up for you.

I didn't notice it was a 6.5-06, that almost sounds like a 6.5x55 improved.
