Personally id get him a bolt action. Theres something more personal about it i find. I started my first hunting season (this year was my first) with a 10/22 and i have nothing but good to say about it if you are experianced and right handed. Being a left handed greehorn i found it was easy to forget that there is always a round in the chamber after taking a shot on a grouse. Now if you are set with a semi auto. I would go 10/22 all weather as its a bit lighter. The only thing i would change is the sights they where stupidly hard to focus on i found. No need to get fancy.
