This is my method as well, but I clamp it to a workbench so the blade sits flat. With most blades I draw file along on the top edge, carefully following the existing angle to keep things proper, lightly take the burr off of the bottom when you are done. If you file too much on the bottom edge it is possible to screw up the edge angle and it can be a bugger to get it back.
Regular sharpening (every year or so depending on how much use your auger gets) makes for easy touch ups. If you let your blades get dull, or accidently run them into the bottom
then it can be a PITA to get them working properly again.
