Anyone fish Lake Winnipeg here?

Hello. I'm seeing if anyone else looks for the big Greenbacks on Lake Winnipeg too?

I grew up there fishing on the lake and the river you can catch them right in Selkirk Manitoba just out of Winnipeg are in the South Basin of Lake Winnipeg many access points should be some good guide service is still out there

Yep, I live in Winnipeg. Haven't been out this year with school, but my Dad fishes it all the time. Awesome place to go. Lucky to have it so close! I would trade it for the mountains any day though...

Nice pics Zip n Z. We go every year too. Caught some real nice ones too. Last year a few over 30". Try and hit it in March when the bigger fish are moving in toward the Red. Last year there were a lot of sauger around too.
So far this year it sounds like the ice and access is pretty good. Not a lot of heaves or cracks. Yet... lol. Can't wait.

Every walleye angler should do the pilgrimage at least once to lake Winnipeg for hard water green backs. It's like nothing you could imagine. We go every year, the challenge is logistics, where to stay is the number one problem for most. Hotels usually book up 6-8 months in advance. If anyone needs help finding rooms I have a few contacts in Gimli that could possibly accommodate you. Just pm me and I will be glad to help you out! I will be there with a bunch of Kamooki pro staff in the second week of March.

I have never seen a walleyes head that big!!!

I, too, am a born-and-raised 'Toban, and love that incredible fishery. Almost impossible to describe to Albertans, because the fishery across Manitoba is just so much better than that of Alberta. So many different species in so many more lakes. It's really incredible. Every year, some 15lb, 32" greenies come outta south basin on Big Windy. Hard to even imagine...

Is March the best time to go if a guy wanted to make the trip out there?

Fishing has been great up till now, but access is a whole nother story. Lots of 28", 29",30" have been caught already. Tons of sauger too. Here is a facebook group to checkout. Ice Fishing Manitoba Lots of pictures and info.

Yeah I heard the fishing is picking up the last lil while.
Hopefully the access stays somewhat decent. Things change pretty fast on that lake though!
We take atv's or sleds so it's not so bad usually.
Going second week of March again this year too.

Beautiful silvery walleye in the pics.
I lived in Winterpeg for one winter and didn't go ice fishing once... idiot!
Wondering about the jumbo perch and other sunfish in the lake? There's got to be some big perch in that lake and all of Manitoba. What about white bass and freshwater drum through the ice?

March is probably the best time on Lake Winnipeg for size and numbers.

Yeah Red, get the odd school of white bass come in. The flasher screen lights right up when a pack of them come in. they are easier in the summer.
I'm not really after small fish when I'm there.

I was home at New Years, but things were still pretty quiet at that point. Fished Hillside Beach and then the Red at CIL Road. I hear Balsam is just smokin' right now off Mile 103 Rd. Going home March 11th for a Jets game with the cousin, and I think we're going to head out there that morning to see if we can get into some hawg greenies. Fingers crossed....
