Default Burbot Slayage!!

Well me and some of the boys went out for some burbot on Saturday and well to say the least, we kicked some burbot .... All 5 of us were able to keep our limit, not sure what the total tally was but i would imagine over 40 burbot were iced and 3 pike(2 under legal limit and one 31 1/2, small for us haha all were released). Managed to get my new personal best burbot, 29", 10lb. Riffer managed to land his first burbot ever as well.

Ok caught this burbot and noticed its head and had to take a few pics. What the hell happened to it. Ive heard it could be leeches but from the tears in the flesh(especially right behind the eye) i think a pike might have grabbed it and it escaped now its bruising.

Not sure what the spot was called, had a buddy from Red Deer guide us and that was my first time on Gull, but they were hittin just a jig head with a smelt/minnow, seemed the basics were workin good.

Burbot like to pull and swin in circles, they give an ok fight. They arent really a fish you catch for the fight but more for the meat I was just using straight Power Pro, others were using mono with steel leader, either way they all worked good.

I caught some that had blood sucker looking things all over the fishes body. Not sure if it;s related to that or not.

Wow, looks like you guys had a good time.
Its times like those that really boost the confidence (even if it is burbot )

Id say that Burbot had a good run in with a pike...its quite possible it happened while you were pulling it up to the hole.
I get that quite often while trolling and hooking small jacks on the Ottawa River....your reeling in what feels like weeds on a heavy weight rod with 60# power pro and WHAMMO. The teeth marks are always similar to the ones you show, even those small tears are probably from its smaller row of teeth.

Heres one of the more grussome encounters with 58 incher.
