Default Wolf hunting in below -20°C

For the trappers and hunters,

How is wolf and canine activities affected by extremely cold temps? Do they tuck into beds like ungulates or hit the road looking for food?

Better or worse hunting?

Coho

I like it better when it’s very cold for coyote hunting. Especially if it is calm and sunny.

Cold is no determent to their movement.

Yesterday, at -40 f/c a pack of app 9 wolves
hit my line trail & were on it for 4 miles.

Only another half mile to four MB750's
in fresh overnite snow.

Won't you know it, they must have scented a deer.
They killed it 50yds off the trail, still steaming.

Like H380 mentioned be ready for some good action from hungry yappers and yodelers during cold snaps.

One thing to know is sound seems to travel farther in cold weather so adjust your call volume accordingly. I only used hand calls for coyotes. Maybe other callers can comment on their experiences with the volume of electronic calls in cold weather.

If you have a pack coming into a call single file in deeper snow, shoot the last animal on the trail first. Gives you a better chance at the first closer animals when they scatter.
