Ice doesn't discriminate. Treats all lines the same

What everyone else said and the mono version I had also kept a lot of reel memory which caused huge tangles when ice fishing for big whites. Pulled it all off last year and threw it out and will never go back.

2 of the biggest factors I have found that contribute to ice buildup on line (mostly braid anyway) are line diameter and condition of the wax/factory coating. Thin braid builds less water than thicker stuff and if your braid is fresh and has the waxy coating still, it absorbs less water and will not ice up as bad. If you have fuzzy old braid, there is more surface area for the water to freeze onto and it will ice up worse. Usually strip off the last 15-20 feet a few times a season to help reduce ice build up. You can also flip the braid end for end on your spool to get the most out of it.

Mono is less porous than braid so it doesn't tend to ice up as bad in the first place. Trilene XL and other limp formula mono's work just as well as anything.

So what is everyone using as opposed to ice line? I have never had an issue with the blue stuff, but always interested to hear what works better for people.

And I dont think it works any better, I just drank the juice.

Treat your dry braided line with the silicone boot protectant, and it'll make the line hydrophobic. The biggest issue, as many know, is the line soaking up water and freezing. Branded ice lines are waxed so they don't absorb water, which is why they market it as such. I can't speak for this working for mono or flouro.
Your home-treated line will float a bit more than normal, and may see issues with light braid with small jigs. But when fishing heavier rigs, it doesn't make a difference. Just a little tip for y'all!

I pretty much gave up on braid for ice fishing, I like baitcasters with 30 pound Trilene big game mono for pike and havent had a freezing issue on my reels since. plus if you get wrapped up landing it in your tent you dont lose a finger to the braided line

My go to line for trout and perch and whitefish is 6 lb spider wire.

When I fished for walleye… 8 lb spider wire

For pike… any 10 -15 lb line is good enough depending on pike size.

Leaders at the end for toothy critters.

I use 20lbs braid for everything as long as the outside temps don’t freeze up the line too bad if so then it is lighter mono but depends on species too
Large eyes on the rod are a must for me especially outside fishing in colder temps.

I use vaseline to coat the Guides and wax the line(mono or braided). It works well

Does your spider wire freeze outside?
