Launch is fine for fishing boats. Perch fishing has been fantastic.

No problem at the launch.

First time ever while bottom bouncing for walleye in 20FOW that I caught not one but 3 perch. Don't even know how those little critters were able to get the hook in their mouth.

Stoped a few times to jig but again the perch seemed every where yesterday.

A few walley but just too small for my fishn bud who loves eating them.

All in all a great day with little if any wind and hardly any one else on the water

Wallies are thinned out so the perch are coming back eh? Imagine that.

If only we could learn from this and manage some more of our lakes

We saw thousands of 1-2 inch perch on the camera in the winter. In the years before we would be lucky to see a few.

Awesome thinned out Walleye and a bunch of cigar sized Perch sounds like a destination fishery to me.

Walleye will be back check the stocking reports.

Cigar size perch are not going to draw anglers but long term provide an improved forage base for both pike and walleye. In the long run you will end up with a healthier(likely bigger fish)moderate numbers predator population with some perch on the side

Much better than a large population of meh size walleye at the cost of other species. But hey if you enjoy jiggling minnows for little walleye that fight like a wet sock so you can brag how you C&R 100 runts to your buddies I guess thinning walleye was a bad thing

But looks like the goal was never to see it through balancing the fishery with the stocking report. Just a show for the public

What a waste and very short sighted not considering long term benefits to

Probably correct regarding the goal. I do believe it is being run as a 5-year experiment with nothing permanent in mind. I hope it sticks and it expands to other lakes where walleye run rampant. How about the new general reg: 1 walleye under 50 cm where continued stocking is happening.

I think a 1 under or a slot would definitely be a good option. If they are going to continue stocking the numbers stocked vs harvest need to be considered if a good balance is going to be reached. Limited harvest and heavy stocking it’s not going to help either

Really I am loosing faith in Alberta fisheries management and until Alberta anglers develop an organization that’s primary focus is to represent Alberta anglers it’s not going to change.

But there doesn’t seem to be enough people who give a crap

Slot limit although I was sceptical at first seems to work. If they implemented this type of regulation on a number of lakes I feel it would spread out the pressure. Stock supplementally where required.

Walleye were never native to Sylvan, they were stocked.

Perch are coming back in massive waves and the shiners are too. The minnows were so thick around the docks this year, you could walk on them.

As for perch size, the size class has been steadily increasing since the 1 walleye limit was put in place. For the most part they are between 4-8" but we did manage a good amount over 10" this year.

All this talk of perch in Sylvan Lake reminded me that Sylvan, at one time, produced the Alberta record perch. The provenance of the fish was highly suspect, so the powers that be concluded that the Sylvan Lake perch was more likely a walleye and disqualified the record.

The walleye in sylvan 45 years ago were a good size but harder to catch.

Default Trolling perch

This open water season I caught two 10" perch while trolling with the Red and White Len Thompson 00 spoon. Crazy big lure and was surprised to catch them.
Hoping to actually catch a few big ones while ice fishing this year.

One week ago I was fishing with my daughter in Palm Bay on the north west end of the lake and caught my best Sylvan Jackfish thus far, guessing he was over 8 pounds. and that's the only thing we caught in the couple of hours spent out on the water. D.H.

My friend went out on the Monday trolled the north end and part of the south and only got one pike. Told him to pick his spots and cast. I would also be wrong. Guess the lake was like mirror glass he said. Find the weed beds and hit em with the frogs, they did and nada. Oh well, that's why it's called fishin' and not catchin'
