Default 223 75 Gr HPBT H4895 testing

Tried out some 75 gr Hornady HPBT hand loads as well as a friends Hornady factory 75 Gr Steel Match and Superformance ammo to see how my stuff stacks up. I tried out some old 50 gr vmax as well but I think I'm sticking with 75. The factory stuff at 32 a box is a little steep.

I'll still refine the loads but no pressure signs and looks promising at .440 moa

This is from a Stevens 200 with a Savage 10 fp-sr barrel in a Boyd's stock.

Went out again on the 5th 12th and 26th testing more loads shooting 5 shot groups. It's amazing how much of a difference .1 of a grain can make in these small cases. 23.0 and 23.7 is where both groups tighten up again. These are from yesterday the 12th.

Here is more testing from yesterday. It was terribly hard work out there shooting groups out in the sun all day

I think I'll now narrow down on the 23.0 and 23.7 groups to play with oal. We loaded them up to 2.245 to fit into my friends AR mag in his Mossberg MVP. I will lengthen the rounds to see if I can tighten things up even more.

Since these are for hucking long bombs then I just might stick with the 23.7's

I just ran the numbers through quickload and the 23.7 is an over pressure load. I'm not showing any pressure signs but I'm sticking with the 23.0 load as the groups are just as tight and I'm at 57725 psi out of a max allowed 62366 and 2848 fps out of a 22 inch barrel.

Thanks man. Still a work in progress but getting there.

A friend was given a pound of Vihtahouri N133 so we will try to develop a load for some 50 and 55 vmax's we have so that's one of the next one's on the list.

Looking to have some pet loads for different bullets based on what's around. I'll stock up on 500 or so of each once we lock it down. It's fun getting out every other weekend either way.

Obviously you have enough twist to shoot long bullets but I think trying the v-max is a good idea. I haven't shot 223 for many years but got nice results from both 40 and 50 gr Vmax with H322 in a 1:12 twist barrel. I swear those 40's were leaving a vapor trail

You sir are correct. I did a few batches of 50 gr zmax rounds which I was going to start another thread on so someone else looking for a decent load can find one to start off of. Over the course of the last weekends they were in the .4 to .5 groups with 25.9 H4895 at 3337 fps. Should blow a gopher or magpie up real good should one try to start something.
