While many of you own $500.00+ firearms that just won't be a reality for me for a while. Should I switch my sights to a russian SKS? I have shot one before and I do enjoy it!

I appreciate all of your opinions and help. Being new it's hard to establish exactly what I need and what I am looking for.

I recently bought a 10/22 because I'd heard that they were so much more reliable that the 597. From what I've seen so far, it's a little bit better as far as cycling. Quite bad at first, but seems to be improving the more I shoot it.... A friend bought his wife a Marlin Spincster and I was really surprised how well it cycles ammo. For a cheap 22 I was impressed. Don't expect either one to be terribly accurate.

No need to swear...I'd give a Plinkster a try before a 597.If anything, they are priced a little bit lower. Or look for a used 10/22. Semi-autos are great for gophers when they start to run...quick follow-up shots.

I bought my 597 some time ago and it wasn't much more than a couple bucks over 150. The only issue I ever had was a few rounds of cheap cheap Winchester would have an issue in the magazine. I sanded a bit of the magazine and rarely had an issue afterwards. It is what it is. A relatively inexpensive firearm to shoot cheap ammo. I had fun with it shooting gophers and still would if there were some around. If you can do the deal in person, do it.
