Default Battery changeout consequences

I am about to change out the battery in my 2004 Chev 2500 LS. I'm told you can't just change the battery anymore, as the computer needs reprogramming as well as modules.
Well, I'm pretty old school and really don't think it should cost me 100's of dollars to change out a battery. Sooooo, what can the AO community advise me when I change it out? Could I plug in a battery booster pack into the cig lighter to keep power to the computer and modules while I do the swap? Or just go for it?

I dont think with that truck you have to do anything at all.
I had that year make and model at one time. I think your "advisor" is way off.

I think you only have to worry if you backfeed power through the system somehow.. We removed my buddy's batter from his 2012 truck for our trolling motor, and went back in with no issues.

Nobody told me that there was a problem. So - battery has been changed just like them old-fangled 1990's models.

Change your battery, you're going to lose presets on your radio and reset the clock if you have one.

Your fine. Change the battery.

What you are probably thinking about is the radio. You can't swap out a OE radio for another OE radio with out some reprogramming.

I changed the battery in my 04 Chev Silverado 1500 4x4 in august and I never did anything different than I have for the past 40 years and about 10+ vehicles.
Reset clock, but I think radio setting stayed the same, could be wrong on that tho.

When I changed the battery on my 2006 GMC, the radio stopped working, and the heater/AC wouldnt come on. I spent hours hooking and unhooking the battery, and pulling fuses trying to get it to rest itself, and it finally worked again.

My factory CD changer still won't work and has 6 CDs stuck in it, because I changed the battery.

I'm not sure if this is a common problem, just sharing my experience.

I just changed the battery in my 05 Dakota and the only issue was the presets on the radio. Now the idea of using the bosterpack in the lighter is a good idea, that will save the radio stations.

I assume the fellow that is telling you about all the issues is the one that will be charging you the install fee? You can get a great truck battery at costco for ~$80+ $10core and install it yourself for free

Just changed one on a 2005 with no issues. I made sure I firstly had the hold down undone and removed the neg cable before the positive, by having the hold down undone first the truck was only without power for a few seconds while I swapped batteries. Connected the pos first then neg. Didn't even loose the presets.

If you think there'll be hassles, get one of those "computer savers" from a parts place - NAPA, AutoValue, etc.

It takes a 9V battery and shoves that voltage into the system through the cigarette lighter plug, and the connector comes with it.

I use it when I'm not sure.

All your radio and computer settings are saved.

It won't hurt nothing when you connect the new battery because the 12 volts will "push back" to the 9 V, and the device has "overload protection" and just shuts down.

X2, and the Costco batteries generally have higher cranking amps than OEM + warranties are top shelf

If you need there is a tool called a memory retainer for the car, plugs into the car via the obd2 port and keeps the computer going for a short period of time, it's available from Mac/ snapon and any large tool dealer like dash auto

In a licensed mechanic with 14 years at gm dealerships. You are fine. Just have to reset the clock after. As long as you don't cross the positive and negative you'll be fine.

If its a 2012 you will have to reset the fuse that feeds power to the muffler bearing coolant pump. Numerous how tos on Youtube for this..

Some vehicles have radios with security codes that need to be entered after power has been disconnected; to discourage people from stealing the radio. Other than that, I have never encountered a problem replacing a battery.

After the local stealership told me I couldn't I couldn't swap an OE radio for another in my 2007 dodge I called BS and went ahead and did it anyway. Works just fine.

get a spare battery from a buddy, hook up some booster cables to the positive and negative leads in your truck and then to spare battery. undo the leads on your truck battery and remove old battery and put new battery in. tighten connections. remove booster cables. done. just be very careful not to let positive ends of booster cable touch any grounding.

Disconnect old battery and remove. Replace with new battery and connect proper terminals. Program your clock and radio presets. Continue use as normal.

I just changed out my 2 batteries at the same time on my 07 GM 2500 so I dont think your 04 will be an issue.

I sure hope this isnt an actual service advisor or I would be service my vehicle elsewhere.

Okay thanks to everyone, even the muffler bearing guys. On bearings you'll not jerk my chain, as I was an industrial mechanic for a lot of years, but when it comes to computer problems, well I usually end up on the wrong end of things. We always had a computer whiz to fix those problems.
