Default My best dog day ever

It may not be all that special to you guys that put up big numbers of coyotes , but 7 in a day is my personal best by far . Cold weather and some snow have certainly helped but I'm giving a lot of credit to the scent control I'm getting by using dead down wind spray on my boots ,pant legs and gloves while working my sets. Before I started with it I was getting 1 or 2 a check and since then it's much better , some in same sets in back to back days . Got thru only half my snares today , gonna sneak out tomorrow and do the rest .

You know I was a little leary of all the hype surrounding it but decided to give it a try . Caught 5 coyotes in first 14 days and 21 in last 4 since spraying down each time I go thru to check . I don't like having to get right in to check snares , but wind here wreaks havoc with em so I have to . Yes there are some pretty ones .

Awesome catch H380!! how do you walk on the trails to check your snares?Once I get more than a foot of snow I push the snow with my feet, but then I can't get the coyotes to follow the trails at all. Any advice would be appreciated?

I'm no expert in the art of snaring , sometimes I just get lucky , best ask nube , braggadoe or one of the other regulars that are very successful , thats where I get alot of my info . I tend to stay off the trails the dogs are using as much as possible and do my setups from the sides. Like you , I once tried making the trails and got refusals aplenty . I check the buckbrush patches where I have my sets as much as possible with binos and only approach a set if it is down or holds a coyote . One thing I have learned this year is to set on as many trails as possible and make most of my sets out away from the bait from anywhere from 15 - 200 yds . they tend to do alot of circling . All these tips and advice have been gained by reading posts here on the trapping discussion and are appreciated .

Is this stuff a product you use braggadoe? I've been giving my snares a light dust of tan paint and then getting them scent free withg another boil of baking sode , but easy to give too much paint and slow em down .I'm open to any suggestions for getting the shine off , baking soda alone doesnt seem to do much on mine . Dave I think you dont have to be product specific and any of the scent eliminators should work . Wholesale , Cabelas or Trapper Gords probably has some .

Thanks for the reply H380. At a few of my baits I have to walk on the trails to get to the snares. I will try and limit checking my snares to once a week and hopefully they get less cautious then.

I have 8 baits this year and I've been checking my baits every 3 days or so with only picking up one coyote every check for the last 3 weeks and I'm still dumping 1000+ pounds of bait a week which is mainly eaten by Ravens and the few coyotes I have coming though are very cautious. i think they're either not very hungry or they don't like my scent.

I've been coverify my bait pikes with logs and sticks and whatever I can find to keep the Ravens at bay a little. The coyotes are easily able to move that stuff out of the way to get at the bait. If I can get an extra day or so of the bait being there because the Ravens aren't getting at it that's huge!

Same here with the coyotes hanging back and circling. I have my snares +50m back from the bait and that seems to work better. I'm putting more snares up +100m back on the other side of the patch of bush where they are entering it. I'm going to be short of bait pretty soon and I'm going to fill a rubber maid container with scraps and then fill it with water to make a meatcicle. Make the birds work at it a bit and the coyotes can't take chunks away into the bush.

I will try this. I have noticed some tracks further away from the bait as well.
If an extra couple of hours of work will double my catch then I'm all for it!

Oh for sure! Once the snow is too deep to get the truck all the way to the bait I will start doing the same so I don't have to rebait so often.

My favourite and most productive bait is set up this way. I set all the trails going in and can check almost everything with a flashlight from the seat of the truck. I don't go more than two steps into the bush to check the others. A piece of flagging helps to know where to stop the truck so the snare will be visible. Fast efficient checks and minimal disturbance unless I have a catch. Multiple catches at the same spot are a regular occurence.

Lots of blown down trees create pinch points where they enter the bush. They use the same trails every year. I also create pinch points by dragging fair size trees into place to narrow up a wide point. I don't block it down too much though and I place them as if they blew there.
