Default Stream suggestions - RMH area

Hi all,

Heading out camping with my in-laws at Crimson Lake this weekend and suspect I will need to retreat to some streams for fly fishing and some "alone time". I have been out to the Nordegg and Sundre areas in the past but never fished local to the RMH region. Was wondering if there were some suggestions from the forum? I've been looking through my BRMB and have some ideas but would appreciate some help as well. My 13 year old daughter would really like to try fly fishing, so quantity over quality may be the key.

PM if you would prefer. Thanks.

SS

for yourself I would suggest blackstone river or shunda creek and their tributaries. for your daughter there are a # of put and take lakes / ponds that would offer easier / more successful fishing for a newbie fly fisher

The Blackstone was one of the rivers on my list. I haven't fished it before. It sounds as though there may be rain this weekend and I wondered how quickly it would rise.

I can't say how it is now but I always liked stopping at Vetch creek. It's been a couple years since I was there. Might be worth the explore. Might be limited places for the back cast.

It is the south branch of Prairie creek. Just west and south of Cow lake. Southfork road goes right to the creek and closely parallels it in some places. A small creek with smaller fish but the brookies, browns and small rockies around the beaver dammed places were easy and fun. Easy access. Beaver dams are sometimes removed but the beavers rebuild so the creek fishing evolves.

West of Cow lake on hwy 752 to Range road 85A, then south to Southfork road.
Follow Southfork road and above the railway track crossing you drive right along the creek in places.

If the north Sask river isn't too high there are some fish to be had. The Clearwater is ok in places too.

I would probably hit the wapiabi. Fish from the staging area upstream to the gap. Fair distance between pools. North Ram is pretty good. A bit high though. You could try the upper parts of chambers creek for good numbers of tiny brookies. Tough casting in there though. Pretty brush choked.

Baseline, vetch, swan and tay are all accessible in that general area as well. Find them on a map, get on a cutline and hoof er back in.

I figured I would close the loop here and give a report. My son and I ended up spending the day on the North Ram off the North Fork Road. We walked about 10 km of water and ended up with 10 cutts for our efforts. It was quite slow until around 1 pm with the most surface activity starting around 3.

My son managed a nice drift with an elk hair caddis and connected with his PB cutt.

I managed to lose my Fishpond net with a rubber basket and brown trout pattern on the handle somewhere along the river between km 64 and km 69. It was a gift from my son, so if someone finds it I would love to get it back!

Great fish and thanks for the report. Hopefully you get that net back, I know how nice those are.
