Default Best all around Alberta calibre?

Hey guys, my dad is starting to get serious about starting to hunt this season and I was looking for some help in looking for the ideal calibre for him. He grew up shooting 12ga shotguns with grampa so recoil isn't really a problem. Personally I like my 7mm rem mag was with different grains I can take anything from antelope to moose, but any suggestions would deffinatly be appreciated!

A lot of it is just personal choice.. There are so many good calibers out now and factory ammo is pretty darn good but if you took all my guns away and left me with just one to hunt with I'd want my 300 win mag.

I'd say anything from the 270 winchester to one of the 300 mags.

Default 270-284-30

Pick a calibre that you are comfortable with and know what it will do at the
range you are comfortable with. Practice...practice..practice...you know the
routine.

Why screw around? 460 Weatherby sort of hard on gophers, but just right for those grizz bears

Aahhh. Beat me to it. The gun might be a tad heavy for sheep hunting but if you buy one for an all rounder you are probably tough enough to carry it up a mountain.

My uncle hunted everything from deer to elk to moose with his 270. Lots of one shot kills with a very light gun... just need to know how to shoot. I used a 30.06 with 180 grain Barnes tsx and it went clean through an elk at 487 yards., nothing sexy but it works and the recoil is manageable.

you can shoot if you can get that bottom feeder out to 487 and straight through an elk. Nice shootin. Just think of how much fun it would have been with a real gun!!!!.

Just get a 30-06 and do it all no need for any magnums. Cheap ammo and available everywhere.

Anything from a 25-06 to 338 will work. Pick a gun that he can shoot the best, and as always shot placement is key.

I will have to cast my vote for 45/70 Government.

Because it will handle anything this province has. Kind of overkill for a lot of animals, but it will handle bear well.

Thanks. Got a pic of the heart.... the bullet went through it. Thought I damaged the front quarter but it was only bruised from the elk twisting it as it went down. The entry was between the ribs and exit hit a rib with a hole the size of 3/4" on the other side of the elk. Figured must have been some serious damage since it took only one step and went down.

Go with some thing different..... I love my 9.3x62. Lots of power with relatively low recoil for power produced. Good hunting ballistics to 300 yards esp with light 250gr bullets. And it develops everything in just 20 inches of barrel! Can have a light fast rifle capable of taking everything large and hard bullets kill deer cleanly without opening much just from the size of frontal impact.

Take him to your favorite gun store and let him feel up a few rifles and let him decide.

Its not my favorite cartridge only because its so popular but the 30-06 is without a doubt the best all around Alberta cartridge due to effectivness, ammo selection, and price.

Default Bison

What would be the minimum recommended caliber for Bison? Would be nice if he could get one of those tags!

I know of a few that have been taken with 300 mags and WSM's, and also 7 mags.

The minimum caliber for Bison is a 30-06 with a 180 grain bullet and thats right from the book the wildlife sent me with my draw this year. I shot my Bison with my 300 Win Mag using a 180 grain bullet. I have a 30-06 which I was going to use but the only reason I went with the 300 was its a new gun and wanted to try it out. I hit mine in the heart and it dropped after about 30 yards. I believe its more about shot placement then caliber

My choice is a 30-06 because of the wide selection of ammo and the ammo is pretty cheap to buy also. The 30-06 will take down any animal in Canada no problem but then again so will many others as well.

My buddy shot his buffalo this year with a 308. Not that smart in my opinion but it worked i guess. My vote for the best over all cal would have to go to the 300 win mag. I also love my 338-06 but i seem to grab the 300.
