cut the vent hole below the seat to the out side, and a regular toilet seat...works like a charm with those smelly, flowery things hanging in there

Lyme works very well and something I wanted to try while backpacking in Kakwa a couple weeks back was to hang one of those Fabreeze car things as they filled a car with skanky garbage and according to the ad, it smelled nice in the car, lol.
On the West Coast Trail, the out houses have a bin next to the seat that has a small scoop and wood chips to help with composting. You could use sawdust(very cheap ) and douche it with lavender or some type of oderous product that you like the smell of.

It has the open vent, and I've used ashes...now my buddy is suggesting we add some lime. I was just wondering if there was some super trick that has been long forgotten since the outside biffy went out of style.

With bears around our camp we may not want it to smell too purdy?

well if you want to go back to the good old days forget the tiolet paper and use a Sears catalog or maybe a bass pro flyer.

And here I figured the first off topic comment would be along the lines of:"what a crappy thread".

It's still hot out there...and things get well you know.....

I ran a 3" pipe into the pit and it goes up over the roof line. I bought of the internet a cap that is designed to draw air with as little as a 2mph wind. with a light breeze it draws about 3 cubics of air per minute. No smell inside at all, nadda.

We mounted our 6" vent pipe on the outside. make sure it is on the sunny side, paint it black. the sun heats the pipe which draws the smell up and out.
PS:You need a elbow at the bottom and a short piece of pipe to get into the hole.

Mine exits the pit on the back outside wall, runs to the eave and 2 45's gets me above the roof line. Although it is 3" black PVC the 360 cap provides plenty of suction with a breeze.

I remember years ago we had a toilet, built on the side of a cliff 100ft drop, there wasn't much smell at all.Though it wasn't for the faint of heart to stare down the hole ,lol.
