Default 38-55 questions

Have any of you shot the Winchester Chief Crazy Horse 38-55? I am not a collector I just want a rifle that doesn’t have the rebounding hammer and tang safety like the new Miroku made Winchesters. The triggers are terrible on them and I want to shoot lever silhouette so need a descent trigger. Anybody shot cast bullets with the Crazy Horse? Thanks

Never shot the Crazy Horse specifically but every 375 Win and 38-55 I have shot shoot cast just fine. I also shoot cast in a whole raft of other Cartridges from .223 to 45-70. The big trick is to match the size of the cast slug to the bore. Most 38-55 are around .378 bore, some quite a lot larger than that, all 375 Win are a true .375. As long as you can get quality cast (I buy most of mine from Bullet Barn as they will swage to size) .003-.006 bigger than the bore they will shoot them great.

I shoot .379 [Jet Bullets] out of mine a Marlin 336 re-bore 270gr FNGC at 1600fps. IMR 3031 is a good powder.

Pioneer 2. Where did you get your rebore done? I can’t seem to find a Canadian gunsmith that does it. I have 2 Marlin 30-30’s that would be great as 38-55 rebore. Thanks!

Dean2. I cast and shoot for 30-30,35 Rem ,38-55, 45 Colt and 45-70. I have good luck with all of them. My problem is my Miroku 38-55 has the worst trigger of any rifle I’ve ever owned. It’s 8 lbs and it makes it very hard to shoot offhand at silhouettes. My others are all Marlins and setting up the triggers is easy. Thanks!

There are a couple of places that specialize in tuning lever actions for Cowboy shooting Proline in "Calgary and Rusty Wood Trading are both worth giving a call to see if they can tune your Mirokou. Outside the trigger they are a tremendous rifle.

Default well

Ron Smith in Wimborne AB did mine.He is ancient now and only takes on work if he likes you or what you want built. He cut mine with .376 grooves as to be able to use both .375 and .377 bullets.A .379 chambers so I use that .I am getting 1-1 1/2" 3 shot groups at 100 yards with a 4x Leupold and bad eyes.I went 1-16 twist . Bob Jury in Red Deer is another that has started to re-bore.

Dean, I agree, the Miroku rifles are stunningly well made and accurate. If I could get the trigger down to 4 or 5 lbs. it would be my favourite rifle. I have the Sporter with 24 “ half octagon barrel.

Contacted Rusty Wood Trading. They said they could tune the Miroku trigger to 4 lbs. Going to send it to them right after hunting season. Thank you to everyone!
