I just bought the DJI Phantom 3 Professional for my wife as a Christmas gift!
Though it's all hers, I admit I am looking forward to borrowing it (and her operating skills) when rattlesnake season begins to explore some unfamiliar terrain.
She hasn't opened it yet, but I'm pretty excited to start learning how to use it.

Just a quick update on my problem with BestBuy sending out a box with a pos in it. After a few days of trying to get the customer service folks on the other end of the phone and internet to come up with a solution, Ken got me in touch with the manager of the Lloydminster store. I ran into the city and met Darryl, the store manager, he looked in the box and immediately offered a full refund, exchange, or the full purchase price towards anything BestBuy sells. I took Ken's advice and went with the Fantom 4. Darryl did up the paperwork, graciously offered a further discount on the drone for my trouble and the deal was done. The store was out of stock so the drone will be shipped to me at no cost.
All in all an EXCELLENT experience with Darryl, and the other people I dealt with at BestBuy in Lloyd today. Thanks guys, you've been my goto store since you opened up there and your actions have restored my faith in BestBuy.
After Ken setup the meeting and speaking with him on the phone we met at the store and had a good visit. Thank you Ken your help is very much appreciated! Once again the AO community came up with a solution to another members problems.
Now to try and wait patiently for the postman..........

Glad it all worked out for you.
Huge difference dealing with a call in service line and talking to them in person huh?
Now get that bird in the air, glad everything worked out for you.
It was very nice seeing you again, hope to do some flying together this summer.
If you know of anyone, I have a couple Phantom 4 Pro's for sale.

Very cool!!!
I just printed some hard cases for the Mavic, 1 for the controller, 1 for the drone for a customer that backed out lol.
Let us know what you think of it!
Remember the movie Gremlins?
(never fly without calibrating the compass and imu, never power up with the gimbal protector on, never charge the controller and battery at the same time)

Oh,oh. I did that last night. What problems does it create, Ken?
The Phantom4 arrived a few days ago, I spent a couple evenings playing around with the software, figuring out the calibration and admiring the pristine unit (also shuddering a bit remembering my helicopter days, and the expense, lol). Just before dark last night the wind died down, things looked good. Out the door we went, everything was in the green, with a quick flashback of smashed helicopters I nudged the left stick up. The motors spooled up, she lifted off, went up about 5 feet, I released the stick and the bird hovered like magic! Well then........this is easy! Anyway I flew her around in beginner mode for about 10minutes, landing and taking off, playing with the gimbal and testing out the collision avoidance sensors. With my digits starting to seize up I recalled the drone put it into a hover about 5 feet in the air walked over grabbed ahold of it and skeedaddled back to the wood stove. Way cool!
That was so easy, I felt the need for a night flight(why not, after all we have 10minutes of stick time ). Once the fingers had thawed out, back into the cold we went. Still in beginner mode, the drone launched and flew around in the box with no issues. At one point I did become disoriented and flew away when I was meaning to come back. That spooked me a bit so I brought her home, she lived to fly another day.
Today's flight will be to check the cows, the horses and the water bowl. She's coming out of beginner mode!
Thanks again to Ken and the staff at BestBuy in Lloyd for helping make this happen!

It can burn out the charger from overheating. no-no.
Which could burn out the battery and controller battery at some point $$$$
Good first flight though, just remember small deliberate movements and make sure your antennas are pointed the right way. Keep an eye on your instruments, you will get a warning if needed but nice to watch to be sure.
Also make sure to set your RTH higher than the highest tree, grain bin, silo, whatever. When you get to half battery head home.
If you are close let it get to 35% is ok
post some pics!

I have had a phantom 4 since the spring. Works amazing. I do struggle to find 'meaningful uses' for my drone. I have no artistic vision so my videos are documentary style.

Thanks but i have 4 batteries already and have only used them all once. I also have 2 ac chargers ans a dc one so i could in theory almost fly continuously but i dont. A very expensive toy! I actually use my little blade inductrix mini quad way more terrorizing the animals in my house. Also my pets.
If anybody in the gp area needs some droning done pm me. I work for favours, and hunting access.

And I can guarantee the buyer & his sons are pretty excited to take the maiden flight! Downloaded the app, and firmware last night, still have to calibrate the compass though. Just so happened that one of the guys I work with was flying his Phantom 4 on site yesterday. Pretty neat watching him go through the motions & quiz him up a little. He calls the drone pictures "engineer porn"!
I hope to cut loose from work a little early today, and giving you a call later this afternoon Ken. I'm sure your pre-flight checklist is more thorough than ours, and I want to make sure we don't lawn dart it!! Thanks again Ken

Charge the battery then the controller fully
Download dji assistant 2 from dji.com
Download Djigo to your phone/tablet from the app site
Do the drone firmware upgrade
Calibrate the avoidance cameras
Upgrade the controller firmware
Connect your phone to the controller with supplied usb cable. If you use iPad you have to use your own charge cable.
Do the Imu calibration
Now put on props
Take outside away from any metal and calibrate the compass
Wait for gps and glonas to lock solid and Imu to initialise
Slide the auto launch to the right and let it hover after home position set.
Lift about 6-10 feet, we'll out of ground effect
Familiarize yourself with the controls by doing little flights for and after, side to side, burn a battery or 2 while in beginner mode.
After you are comfortable with everything being backwards flying toward you as opposed to away from you start going a little further, a little faster. Concentrate on just right stick flying to begin. When you have that down, start mixing a little left stick input in for smoother turns and pirouettes.
Remember small movements. If in trouble let go of the sticks. Stay away from trees buildings vehicles people etc.
Watch everything you have time for on YouTube for help.
Call me anytime! Remember to record your flights and take many pictures.
Enjoy!

A couple pictures of the "nerd bird"
They are pretty incredible pieces of technology, and addicting! The next one will be a hexacopter or octocopter pieced together from off the shelf parts.
The only problem I'm having is dumping the video into my iPad through the controller. The videos hang up at 40% and won't continue downloading. It doesn't seem to matter if they are 2minutes or 12 minutes in length.
My record flight is 9266m with top speed of 24.8m/s.

I figured they'd have adapters, I never thought to look the other day in Edmonton .
I will be picking your brain about a new one when the time comes, the research into building one hasn't even begun yet, just a twinge of desire and a friend that figures a drone would be a good tool for spot spraying....someday.

Time to resurrect this thread.
How are all the Post Christmas drone pilots making out with their new tools/toys?
The "NerdBird" has 175km on it in 69 flights. It's taken some pretty incredible stills and some cool videos. I find that stills appeal to me more than video.
I've used it to check cows, horses, water bowls, feed bunks, taken interesting pictures/videos of cover crops...etc.etc. A neighbor was wondering about his winter wheat crop planted in a remote spot that the access is drifted ove. We took the drone over the field low and slow checking different spots, then took pictures at higher altitudes for interest sake.
Useful machines if you have a purpose to fly.
I hadn't had a crash until yesterday, a wicked gust of wind swirled over the cab on the buggy, while landing her. Somehow the drone smacked into the cab, busting a couple props,
And cracking one arm just inboard of the motor mount. It's still flyable, a new body shell is inbound. Operator error(drone was too close to an obstacle) the wind and not sure what else is to blame for that crash. It all could have been avoided by keeping the drone further out from obstacles, live and learn. The more a wreck costs the better the learning experience.
Post up some pictures, videos, and stories!

Love mine, I have an Inspire 2 and Phantom 4. I've been putting more hours on the Inspire 2 lately because of the internal battery heater but the Phantom is super fun to fly and way easier to pack around. I'm in the middle of designing an operator training school to prep folks to operate a UAV safety in Canada but it is probably six months out.

Battery heater, hmmm good idea.
I haven't had any trouble with temps as long as I take the drone outside warm and turned on. Flown in -34C without problems(except my fingers). I can't say if the cold sapped the battery quicker or not. On those cold days short flights to get what needs doing done quickly is best.
The only time I had temperature problems was when the drone had been outside turned off for a while. I can't remember what the warnings were, it was cold and breezy the drone saved some frosty fingers that day.
