Default Handguns on the Line

Just received a note from Uncle Mel Knight, in which he states that trappers may now use a handgun in dispatching animals on their lines..(if one has the proper documentation).. Previously, one could pack iron as a means of protection but not for putting down.. Point was, who would dispatch with a .44 mag. I'm surprised by this move being as it was an issue with me every time that I had to renew the permits that I have..For me, this is at least one thing headed in the right direction..
Hopefully Uncle Mel will hear some other issues that are present as well...

Sorry to walk on you TM.. Must have been writing when you were sending..

Default Handguns on the trapline

I think this is a great development. It will sure be handier than packing my 10/22 everywhere I go. Not to often do I get a letter from the government that pleases me!

Glad to hear that Uncle Mel Night's light finally came on for him. Trappers have been able to get these carry permits for years!!

Just what permit are you referring to YE. There has been no handgun permit for smaller caliber . I did have one for 1 year but was not able to get it again. I believe that to be a clerical error that allowed that.

Hi Sourghdough,
It was a few years ago when I was considering getting a carry permit for trapping and I can’t recall whether or not there was a restriction on the calibre allowed. It may have been some goofy “policy” being used by some Detachments or provincial Firearms Officers? I don’t think .22s were specifically excluded because I had decided that a revolver would be handier than a semi auto in the field but I did not have one and so decided not to pursue getting the permit. At any rate, it is good to hear that small calibres are now going to be “officially” approved!
Have at it.

Good to hear for you guys. Now if one day they'll let us hunt with a handgun up here.

Default Atc

I have an ATC but only for protection and using my 44 mag. Last I heard it was the Fed's that controlled what we can do in regards to the ATC's not Mel Knight (Provincial). It sure would be handy to be able to carry a .22 calibre though!

Just got off the phone, after a lengthy wait, with the people at the office of the Chief Firearms office . This whole scenario really came out of the blue to me and apparently to them as well. So, apparently, the CFO, will be sending out the paper work required to all those presently holding valid ATC. Of course, being as they were caught with their pants down around their knees, they will be about a month b4 the papers are in the mail.. So we should have some finality come next season, hopefully...At least that is how I understood the situation to be...

Default .22

Thanks for doing the digging Doug. Probably will have to re-qualify on the course of fire with the .22 as my ATC specifies the gun (44 mag.) I sure don't mind doing that.

So I'm new to this ATC maybe you guys could help me clarify a few things. The gov' website says that it can be issued to a licensed trapper. I'm a licensed trapper but I do not have rights to a trapline. Would I qualify with a resident trapper license? It does not specify between resident and registered licensed trapper. What do you guys know?

Hi Reddog, When I made application for my ATC , one had to specify in what area you were going to be carrying your handgun, ie, your T/L #, so I see no reason why you couldn't pack , if your residency was on your own land. If you wanted to carry , on your neighbors land, that might be another can of worms, Maybe not for you and me but for those who have been thrown a curve, it might be easier for them to say - NO - rather than come up with more guidelines... Remember, this is something new for them and all scenarios have not yet been seen ... This would be something I would run up their flagpole but don't expect an immediate answer.
Here is their Edmonton # 780 495 7799 and try ext # 9026. Good luck and pls. keep me/us informed and maybe I can help you more...
