Default Puma knives from china????

After seeing Puma knives in blister packs and a much lower prices than in the past, I went home to check a recent aquisition.

Well, It does say "Blade made in Germany." All of my other Puma's say "Germany". Blade looks good, but the rest of the knife is IMHO, a pc of offshore ahhh....poorly finished.......stuff (trying to be polite here).

Anyone that knows me or has seen my previous comments about Puma, knows that I am a big Puma fan. Is this about to end?

Anyone know whats going on? Is Puma now outsourcing...from China, no less.

They're making different lines for the multiple price points that different people shop with in mind, the good ones are still made in Germany. Same philosophy as Buck Knives really, get a new customer with your entry level products then if they start shopping to a higher price-point you've already established a bit of brand recognition with them. I do however also see value in not making a cheap product to begin with, and retaining a highest-quality only reputation.

I've gotten to the point if it doesn't say made somewhere else, assume it comes from China. German Labor costs are unreal and these have always had a bit of an elitist image to them. Way better knives out there for less money.

K....didn't get to Germany, but spoke to the distributor for North America.

Yes the blades are made in Germany with all other work done in China.
You can still get "All German" Puma's, but the blister-pack ones are intended to please the aveage person that wants a Caddilac for the price of a Cobalt.

I guess it had to happen...GM is having it's design and engineering work out-sourced now to Asia, so I guess I'll just have to get used to this stuff......or buy a Ford.

I have a old Puma skinner and a new Puma from china.
The finish from Germany is nice and smooth the bone is a great fit.
The one from China is rough all over, but the blade is the same as the germen built, Now with that said, is the extra $150 worth it ?
Not to me, I took a sander to it and in 5 min, the fit and feel is fantastic.

Default Puma

Vintage Pumaster Steel was Böhler NWN 80.

New knives from China are stainless steel.

You cant match the carbon blades of an original Puma.

You choose...

Default Gamewarden

attached by a lanyard to my belt loop since 1980 although I have tried to walk away from it several times. Skinned a full bear including paws, several deer and an elk without it needing a touch up. Found one for my son with bone saw like mine many years ago but the **9tards stole it when they broke into the house 6 years or so ago. I have many knives but the Puma gamewardens are by far my favorite.

Be thankful they have a plant in China.
A lot of merchandisers have gone this route.
The high end stuff usually has less markup and sells in small numbers.
Oft times they keep producing it only because the are making a ton of money on the 'made in China' line that 80% of the population can afford.
