Default Finding sheds in January and now I’m a believer gaha

Congrats to those finding sheds already! I don’t usually go looking for shed antler for a couple more months. But today as I was diving I spotted from the highway what looked to be a fresh one about 100 yards from the road. Backed up, pulled out the binos, and I see not one but two antlers! I’m thinking they have to be a set, only 20’ apart! My best whitetail set to date by far! Well, I guess it’s time to start burnin boot leather and Christmas calories.

that is just awesome. I love heavy dark antlers like that.
I sold a matching set similar to that years ago. they went just over 200 non typ and in perfect shape too. wish I would have kept them now.

Default Mass

I saw this on Facebook yesterday. Picked up in Alberta! Crazy mass, I’ve never seen a 3 points shed like this before.

Elk shed mostly around mid april. Elk are the last to shed of the ungulates. Anything that is found before that is considered early. They begin growth again almost immediately.

Made it out yesterday and today. Picked up one yesterday at a regular spot. Today I went for a drive on the way home from fishing and found a decent field. Spotted one from the road with the binos so went and knocked on the door. To the lady that answered and said yes go ahead, if you’re reading this thanks again lol. Anyway ended up with nine in a couple hours. I took ATL’s of all of them but figured I’d just post them all together.

Default Shed thread

Went for a drive last evening. Saw over 100 white tails, and not one had antlers. Time to start putting some miles on my boots it seems.

Found a nice thick tall mule shed today in the Bashaw area. Still fresh blood on the button. His front forks were damaged in velvet but I sure hope to find the other side. I'll post some pics when I get a nice stack. Nice start for me, I don't have much daylight to look but if this one's the only one I find all year I'll be happy.

Default "48 hours"

I consider myself fortunate to live in the country and get to watch wildlife on a regular basis. This winter, there are 30 or so deer living in my woodlot. This includes 14 bucks...6 of these 3.5 years or older. These pics chronicle the shedding process of one of those mature bucks...a nice 8 point.

I watched him in the evening feeding with the other deer...
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

The next morning while having a cup of coffee, I noticed he wasn't out as usual feeding with the other deer. When I looked through my binos, I could see tines sticking up.
[IMG][/IMG]

The deer that were out there were in no big hurry to get back to cover. They made me wait a while before they finally left and I could go take a closer look. What I found interesting is that probably a dozen or so of the deer stopped and spent varying amounts of time smelling/checking out that shed antler.
[IMG][/IMG]

Finally, when I knew they were far enough back into their bedding area, I went to get a closer look. This is the "how it lay" pic.
[IMG][/IMG]

And a couple of reference pics...the first 2 circumferences are just over 6" at their smallest point.

Default "48 hours" continued...

He showed up in the afternoon still packing the one side.
[IMG][/IMG]

You could clearly see the bloody divot and some blood running down the side of his head in these first 2 pics.
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

I wondered if he'd show up the next morning having lost the remaining antler but he was still carrying it. I saw him that evening too...still carrying. The next morning, he was out there again...still packing that one antler.

He showed up that 3rd afternoon having finally dropped the other side.
[IMG][/IMG]
So the whole process took more than 48 hours. Once the deer have dispersed and left the woodlot, I hope I'll be able to find the other side...but a deer can cover a lot of ground over 2 days!!!

Great post Northbuck.. Thank's for sharing that.

I'd bet it is laying back in the beds.. If they are at that spot every day, Id guess he didn't go far.

I’ve been keeping an eye out on the local population (hour north of Calgary), most seem to still sporting their head gear. Cold weather and now a few inches of new snow as well have kept me from really looking. Hopefully a fresh melt will coincide with sheds dropping...anyone else noticing gear hasn’t really dropped yet? Or am I just not tuned in?
