One cartridge to rule them all
If you had to choose just one for game such as deer, moose, elk and bear what would it be. What have you had great success with?

I haven't tried it out yet but I'm pretty stoked about my 35 Whelen as a do-all hunting setup.

I have been hunting with the .30-06 for the past 12 years and although a boring cartridge it has got the job done for me and I see no reason to change other than for the simple reason of owning another firearm. From coyotes to moose it has been very effective.

Any number of cartridges out there will do it, I know the B&C 29 have been killed with everything from the '06 and up.
For the animals I hunt a .303 or a .308 in good rifle do just fine as do the 7X57, 260, 6.5X55..........

If the 30-06 were just invented this year it would be hailed as a modern marvel cartridge capable of killing everything North America has to offer, all in a package with very manageable recoil. And, it wouldn't just be marketing hype. It would be the gospel truth. Some things are just hard to improve on.

Not likely, without the long history, and huge advantage in time before most modern cartridges were conceived, it might not be a big seller at all. If it was only introduced this year, it could very well be a failure as far as sales are concerned, and it could fade away in a few years.

Just a git r dun cartridge.
Other cartridges listed are great too but you also got to take into consideration availability, ease of just buy and shoot as appose to reloading, farting around with pet loads etc don't get me wrong the 338-06 sounds sexy but she needs a little too much attention for the average guy.

I've used a 7mm Mag for 45 years.....shot from antelope to moose and bear. Great caliber, IMO.

I think a 300wm is pretty universal. Could be used for everything including big bears.

What's the saying about a one-gun hunter?
I think that any rifle from .270 on up that you practice with and use almost exclusively is going to be a better choice for any big game in Alberta than the gun you select from your golf bag of choices that you only shoot a couple times a year (or less).

There's a handful of 'Betty' cartridges: .30-06, .270 Win, .308 Win, 7 x 57, 6.5 x 55
Then there's a bunch a 'Veronica's' as well, they have cachet but are high-maintenance or you're sacrificing something (often magazine capacity and barrel life)
Did you pick a Betty or a Veronica for the woman in your life? (Betty's are where it's at)

Midge. .375 H&H. A little stout in recoil but not ridiculous. Eat right to the bullet hole. Flatter shooting than a lot would imagine.

For me it's management of shot placement, felt recoil and adequate knock down power to dispatch game quick and efficiently. Winchester Model 70 in .270. low recoil, good factory load selection found any where and easy to hand load with good selection of bullets and powder.
Same caliber in 1885 or B78 with iron sights would be handy and easy to pack too.

300wsm and second choice would be 30-06.
Either would be launching a Barnes bullet.

.300 winmag hands down one of the most versatile calibers with widespread grain and bullet choices available.

300 win mag has took 90% of my game, would have to say it's the do it all for me. Flat, powerful and will take anything with ease. Would be interesting to poll this up afterwards
