Default Camp wainwright deer

I have 2 friends that were awarded Wainwright deer tags. On is the Dec 3-5 draw and the other Dec 7-9. Can anyone who has hunted Wainwright before provide me with some advice when we head out that way for the hunt. From what I have heard hunters need to attend a briefing daily on where they are allowed to hunt and need to check in at the end of the day. Is there anywhere nearby that a guy could set up a wall tent or is this a hunt from a hotel room type draw? Having never been to Wainwright before what kind of terrain is there? Is it a mix of everything or is there a dominant theme to the terrain?Any advice would be appreciated.

Get a hotel and get it early, especially if oil and gas ever pick up...
You will see all kinds of terrain and can experience any type of weather conditions. A shovel, tow strap and good tires on a 4x4 are beneficial.

Deer populations are down, but you'll see deer and often will see a good one!

Have fun.

As above, be prepared to get stuck in some backcountry because if you do you are on your own and I can only imagine how expensive it would be to have a tow company come in and get you.

Attend the safety meetings each morning and listen carefully to what they say. Also check the maps for any previous kills to see if there is any concentration, sometimes it is just with there happened to be a lot of hunters but it also gives you an idea as to where to look around those concentrations

I highly recommend you plan on walking a lot of bush as the Deer are very spooky and all you have to do is lift your foot off the gas and they are gone

A friend and I were there last year on the second hunt and the only ones we saw outside of the restricted zones were very far away and very spooky

We walked alot and were lucky to have some snow, we saw a lot of sign off the road and in the Bush but did not connect on any, the farther into the Bush you go the more sign you will see

I would be looking to take either very close or moderate shots, highly unlikely you will get any cross-country shots

Good luck,

It's a great hunt that was well organized when I was there a few years ago. I hunted mostly in the south east & east end. Had a great time & got 2 antlered mule deer.

Drawn for deer Dec.7-9. First time hunting there, should be fun. If anybody with moose tags are there the same time, feel free to drop me a PM with cell number a bit closer to the date and we can keep in touch.

Kind of threw me a bit when my draw said "white-tailed deer" on the approval. Had to go back and re-read the regs, lol. I knew what i had read but their WT designation sure got me checking, lol.

Just curious, what priority were you to pull the muzzleloader tag this year?

Interesting. You're the 2nd person I've spoken to who pulled the muzzleloader on a 4, but I was "not awarded" on a 5....

I have drawn the nov30-dec2 season and this will be my first time so a few questions here too.
Due to the time of year will rattling work? Or are they a little too scared by then?
Can you camp or park a trailer near by? I have some family west of Sherwood park, is it too far to drive in every day? I've stayed in enough crappy overpriced hotels in my life that I would like to consider other options.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah I saw that from last year as well. The issue that bothers me is if priority 4's are getting drawn shouldn't all the 5's have been drawn 1st?

Yes, they should have been.....you didn't mix up the draw code by chance??, did you apply alone?

We stayed at the Bio Vista last year. It was nothing fancy but nice, clean, just off the main drag and a straight shot downtown to the place with the great steak sandwich. Good price, too.
I don't think they have kitchenette's though? I may be wrong on that.

While there for a grad once we stayed at the Springs Motor Inn. Same thing, the restaurant on site had a great breakfast but not sure what time it opens.

Never stayed at the Bison, but I believe it's got kitchenette's.

Best of luck to those drawn, last year was our first hunt there and we sure enjoyed it.

The lowest draw priority of your group, is what your entire group would have been assigned. So, if one of the other 3 people in your group had priority 2 (for example) - then the entire group would have been assigned as a 2 for this draw. Since you weren't drawn, each of you gains a priority level for next year.

Bang on HAL, I just got off the phone with Albertrelm and my friends wife was a 4(even though he was sure she was a 5!). That dropped all of us into the 4 group which is disappointing. Thanks for your feedback guys and to the successful applicants, have a great hunt!!!

This happens quite often, which is why we verify all of the priorities on Albertarelm before submitting group applications.
