Wainwright hunt
Well after many years of other adventures I managed to pull a tag for Camp Wainwright this year. Any suggestions on what area is decent area for foot access. I have never spent any time in that part of the province. Any help would be appreciated. I'll have to check which season I was drawn for, but if anyone is interested in hunting as a team, or working as a recovery team let me know.

You could always show up for the sharptailed grouse hunt next month, and do some scouting while you are hunting.

Do you just show up for the bird hunt, or do you have to register before hand?
Where do you find out about it? (Besides aof)

You show up for orientation the morning of the hunt, and then you go out hunting.

The base had a dedicated foot access only area. Arrive early and check out the big base map they always have up on a wall and see where the foot access areas are. Then talk to resident AO base guy Shed Crazy. He is the base biologist. He will steer you straight to where you want to go. Good luck. My son and I are back for the last rifle this year.

Tag
Sorry. I was drawn for deer in the second last season. Dec 11-13.
I thought I would have enough priority for second rifle, must be more applicants or less tags than last year.
Thanks for all the help so far!

I could have drawn the first deer season, but I chose to draw for Dec 11 to match up with the start of my antlered moose hunt on the base.

I'm also going for deer Dec 11-13. Do the hunting areas change quite a bit? I tried looking online for a map, and couldn't find anything. If anybody has a link to or a picture of past years hunting map, I would love to take a look at it. Fantasizing over google earth isn't quite the same when you don't know the boundaries.

Do an AO forum search for wainwright. Tons of good info and I'm fairly sure I've seen some maps posted in some of those threads.

Where to hunt is highly dependant upon how the base has been used by the military. Some areas may be closed due to various training schemes going on, or certain areas may have just seen a bunch of activity, there's not too many ways of telling how this could play out.
From what I remember the south fringe of the base right up to the fence has brought many successes.

Did the first rifle hunt there 2 years ago and really didn't enjoy it! The base has taken down much of the high chain link fence down and replaced it with a barbed four wire fence with the top wire just being a smooth/non-barb wire. So nothing to keep critters penned in any longer. We did see deer for sure but nothing to get excited about! Did plenty of walking too which didn't seem to help any.

Personally I prefer that the animals can come and go as they please, I would rather hunt in a fair chase environment.
