Pee-J comes to a whistle, or at least he did. He is 12 y/o now and mostly deaf. We keep him on a long rope now. The girls wear zapper collars. We rarely have to use them and if we do the tone is enough.....unless they find a rabbit

I don't find them to be particularly stubborn.

Best dog I have owned so-far was a Springer Spaniel.

I was going to replace him with the same, but, located a Cocker Spaniel first.

Admittedly, they are the smallest of all gun dogs, and, not for everyone. But, she is sweet, smart and doesn't shed like a retriever.

Not inviting Labradors to this conversation is like driving a Nitro Burning Funny Car to the drag strip, parking it and watching guys race 1984 Honda Preludes.

With cereal; I would say my 2nd choice would be one of those Orange Retrievers with long hair and 3rd choice would be a Chessy!

Heres a list of all the hunting breeds. Good Resource info. I didn't know there were so many kinds.

I've been around nearly every breed of hunting dog my whole life due to my dad's (wwbirds) training business, but we've only bred Goldens (and labs til our old gal passed) and there's a reason for it. Such a lovable dog, and although they may not necessarily have the same need to hunt as other breeds, their whole goal in life is to please you.

I have owned differnt breeds of pointers and one springer spaniel. For the most part they all have a great personality and were great family pets. Not much difference between the breeds imo as far as persaonality/friendliness is concerned.

I guess I gave the wrong impression.

She will pull on the leash when she is restrained, not stubborn just hates the leash. Yes I do walk my dog in the city without a leash and I have no issues. My Brittany will walk beside me and not run off if it is required. If I give her permission to run she will be gone like a bullet and she will return when I call her. She understands voice, whistle and hand commands also.

WOW! What happen to the golden? Did he fall off the pier?

I'm kidding of course. No one would take a golden onto a p[ier without a life jacket on

Still kidding.

I hunted with a buddy who had a golden . Outstanding dog. Field line and trialed. I would hunt with that dog any day. I have seen some great hunting/family dogs in nearly every breed. It comes down to personal choice.

And I really was teasing about the goldens. I saw a whole litter of labs that would not go in the water. Course they were only 3 days old.

Lol. More like taking your pick-up truck to the drag strip.... nothing wrong with a pick-up truck, but there are lots of other vehicles out there.

Yeah she learned to swim like her grandfather Jim. if you were trialing in BC Alberta, Ontario or Saskatchewan in 86, 87 or 88 you may remember Goldenbarks Skitawaboo Sheep Nipiche (firewater duck dog).
Only the top point qualified golden in Canada for 3 years and top point all breed retriever (qualified) in alberta for 87 & 88 before going open all age.

Yup he could swim, only thing better than his land tests were his water tests as he hit the water 10 feet from shore in one leap.

I'm partial to Golden Retrievers myself.

I have never met an aggressive Goldie, in my opinion they are the most gentle even tempered dog to ever draw breath.

I love watching a good golden work. Beautiful dogs doing beautiful work, it doesn't get better than that.

I have a two year old lab in for training now and he swims like a puppy. 90 lb egg beater till he picks up the bird. I shouldn't laugh, but I do.

Anyone got any info on the Vizsla breed? They seem like they'd be a good duel purpose dog like a Lab without the shedding.

cannot believe no one has relayed "field springers" ... not the show stuff. I am on my third and they are amazing and smart. Often one trial learning. They need exercise. Taught my third one to point when working with other pointers (sorry purists). Had a deaf one the was taught on hand signals and out hunted most other dogs (a nose beyond belief)... You can see my first 2 including the deaf one on Outdoor Quests pilot episode. Great family dogs ...but they need exercise, and can they ever work heavy cover and bull rushes, bull berry etc. That said ... my only advice is that the dog be in the top 10 of canine intelligence.. have worked pheasants with german shepherds, border collies, blue healers, goldens. ohh! give the springer a kennel cut mid august and you will have few burr issues later on.. good luck .. did I say they need exercise?

German Wirehair or German Drathars.
They are a great hunting/working dog and loyal to the end.
They where used from Wild Boars to Bears and do very well as Water Dogs.
Then there are the eye brows and beards and silly facial expressions.
I do not own one but have Dog sat several and hunted over them as well.
When Zeke was on a Pheasant, you had best be ready cause if that tail was a wagging it meant there was one close by.
He could and would jump three feet in the air trying to catch it for you
No pics , but the image is still vivid in my mind.
Tough choices for a prospective dog owner .

X2. I love the sound of my hound. I love that nobody else likes the sound. I love the sound of others snickering that they don't like the sound. And then I enjoy the sound of my hound again. Weeds people out! Those that stay are good; those that leave were probably not worth the bother.

Have you heard about the definition of unconditional love?

Put your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car, drive around for three hours, then see which one is happy to see you.
