Rabbit hunting near Calgary
Now that big game is over, my son wants to get out for some rabbit. We live in the south of Calgary. Now that MacLean Creek is basically a no go for shooting, what are some other public land places that may yield some good results. Even the wife wants to come out.
I have never hunted rabbits before so I have no idea what to expect.

Mclean is still a go for hunting purposes. The shooting restriction is for target shooting out of season.

Would we not be considered “out of season”?

I would try some conservation land for snowshoe hare hunting. It's pretty challenging to spot them with all the snow, but it's fun.

Check out the grazing leases west of the city too.
Still have to call, but late in the winter you should't have much of an issue.

Hi Scott. I've heard that rabbit hunting is very good along railroad tracks. But, my suggestion would be to contact Speckle55, he seems like a pro when it comes to rabbits. Good luck.

You're welcome Scott. The rail track that runs through High River is abandoned. They've pulled the tracks and ties, all that is left is a nicely groomed gravel trail. It runs all the way south of town, probably all the way to Nebraska for all I know...LOL. I'd be willing to join your family and bring Benny the Beagle when and if I can get his tracking collar working. Oh! and BTW, that spot where we shot our mulies last season, is once again crawling with a nice and bigger herd. Alas, time has expired and all we can do now is admire them and take pictures.

Well, you know your way around. Take that right turn on the way to my place, you'll come across the tracks. From there, you can park and head south.

I’ll take a look on the map for it. Thanks for the tip. It’s still rail land and not farm land now?
