Dirt piles
Hi
I see the dirt piles like the one in the picture quite often but don't know what creates them does anyone know?

Just a guess! Mice! Voles!
Level off the loose dirt then poke the area under where it was piled with a rod and try to detect an under surface tunnel.

I had thought that but didn't think they would pile it on top so high - good idea i'll try that and see if there are tunnels thanks.

I'll bet its ants.
I have seen many small piles of dirt with no tunnel similar to what is in the picture and I have come to that conclusion.

Pocket gophers!
Terrible pests.

My first thought was pocket gophers as well.
Hard to get perspective with a photo that size on my phone

If there are lots in proximity it is pocket gophers. They can make a hell of a mess of a yard. The big smoke bombs from Home Hardware or traps is the only way to get rid of them.
