Default My Son's very first shot, first rifle-question?

Is the Weatherby Vanguard really known as a 12" 200 yard rifle?

Am I going to have to insert it in....err I mean return it to the dealer?

I first bought him a Browning .270 BBR and was going to soft load it for his first rifle, but a) thought a .243 would be better suited for him, and b) liked the Browning for myself....

He liked it, felt comfortable shooting it, and hit the paper 2/3 times @ 100 yards in a 4" group. I think he got a little excited when he saw he could do it and let the 3rd get away. (13 yrs old)

He has shot .22's before, became quite proficient with archery, and has squeezed off a few with the glock. His favorite is his very very own Weatherby.

The coolest part, was watching him slowly and deliberately pull the rifle in to his shoulder, sight in then very slowly reach his finger towards the trigger, and actually listening to my "squeeze, dont yank the trigger speech" and put it to practise.

When we were coming back into the house, he said he loved the rifle, and wanted to carry it in to the house, down to the safe. Said it "made him feel like a man"...

Cool moment, good day.

Please welcome Kyle243 to the forum.

Welcome aboard Kyle!
Oh, and don't mind the "old codgers", they really weren't that bad once us kids got to know them!

hi Kyle...
that question would be better served in the G and A section, but anywho..
12" at 200 is a pattern...not a group. its still a kill shot, if your hunting a sheet of plywood
id say that something is seriously amiss..too much/not enuf torque on the receiver screws, loose base or rings, a walking scope, or simply jerking the trigger...
maybe consider having a competant third person shoot it..kinda to create a benchmark...
later roger

I should have been more specific here, sorry.

We have not had the time/favorable weather conditions to try some grouping.
I was just asking if that kind of group is the norm for a Vanguard.

That kind of group is not the norm for any properly scoped gun that is being shot by someone who is shooting properly....

Looks like Vanguards pattern really well at 200yds.
Just think of the long-range goose hunting possibilities...
but would it be ethical?
