Some of you will remember this. If you do You are the same as me GETTING TO DAMM OLD

If any of you have doubts about what we kids paid for a coke and a sandwich at Woolworths

(How many don't know what Woolworth's was?) in the 1950's, here's proof of the era we lived in...

You forgot Royalite which was sucked up by B/A which was sucked up by Gulf which was sucked up the Petrocan and Whiterose which was sucked up by Shell or at least I think that's the way it went.

Nothing beat the old W.W. Arcade. I remember going there as a kid with my Dad, the sporting goods side had racks of surplus M1's right on the floor, I was shocked how heavy they were.(1970 something)

Flash forward to the early to mid 1980's and a sluggish economy, I just graduated from NAIT, needed work, and found myself working in that very same sporting goods section. If you need an old obscure 22 mag, or some guchi screw for some long since dead scope mount they had it, might have took a while to find it but we had it.
Last place in Canada to deal direct with Diawa if I'm not mistaken, Browning was a pain to get in on a regular basis. Ruger 77 tang safeties were hot items, and a Bushnell Scope Chief IV 3-9x40 was on sale for $139.99

Ah, to be your own best customer again......nope.

Yep!... some of us are getting a little long in tooth, I remember as a kid of about 8 years, Mom would give us 25 cents each, a big expense for three boys and one baby girl! my brothers and I would walk down the hill to content bridge campground that had a corner store. About 2 miles, for 25 cents we got a bag of old dutch potato chips and a coke. 15 cents for the chips and 10 cents for the bottle of coke. We had to drink the coke sitting on the steps of the store because we could not afford the 2 cents for the bottle deposit so the store owner just let us bring the bottle back in when we were done. back then all stores took in your empties. I also remember traveling to Edmonton where my dad was working at going to the old Simpson sears mall. there was only one at that time and they had a double movie theater. Every Sat. was kids day and a movie was 35 cents and we would go in the morning and you could switch theaters and watch to movies over and over again. Mom and dad got there shopping done and we spent about 6 hours watching movies! Starting to sound like my grandfather..

My father had a Whiterose station in Calgary back in the late 50's to the early 60's when Shell sucked them up. Yeah the waters running down the other side of the bodies divide now but when you slow down you get more time to reflect and enjoy.

Thanks Chevy I'd lost my copy (they keep disappearing?) and I needed to refresh someone....

My grandma worked at the Woolworth's cafe after she left the farm, my aunt worked in the office there (GP) from the day it opened until it closed. I remember going to the Saturday Matinee, my brother and i got 10 cents and that got you in and bought enough candy for the show and the rest of the week.

Yeah I liked the diners (or fountains) in those place. One long, long, long counter with chairs down the whole length of it........and one lady working behind it. Remember when Woolworths spawned Woolco Stores.........how about SS. Kresge (spawned KMart Stores). Five and Dime stores they were called (Woolworths and S.S. Kresge). I don't recall much of the 50's.......60's yes

Going fishing with dad, we filled up in the middle of nowhere from a hand-cranked pump with the big graduated glass tank on top. The attendant cranked to fill the glass tank from the underground supply, then gravity fed our car through the nozzle.
I think there's one of these oldies at the Calgary Heritage Park.

City bus tickets sold in strips of 14 for $1.00 in Ottawa.

Soft drink empties gathered from the roadside got you .02 cents each at the candy store, where chocolate bars were .05 cents.

Thing is that a decent industrial wage in the 1950s ran to about $45/week.

Default Hand crank pump

I use a hand crank pump every time we go to our cabin near Trout Lake in B.C. The last working manual pump as far as I know of. Still has gallons on the glass.

It's been a few years, but we filled up the car from an old Shell glass gas pump in Bragg Creek on our way to Kananaskis. Is that one still up and running at the old gas station there on the west side of town?

Also, Heritage Park has lots of them now, in their "Gasoline Alley" exhibit. They even have one of the first gas pumps, looks like nothing more than a fuel transfer pump. People would fill up a bucket, and pay for it by the bucket load, and pour the gas straight into their tank from the bucket. The reservoir was either below ground, or more commonly, above ground, often just a barrel.

In the 60's mom would take us kids downtown for a hamburger at the restaurant in Woolworths in Lethbridge, then we would go watch movies at the old Capital Theater. Being a kid back then was fun.

It seems like we all try to do so much these days, that the simple, enjoyable things pass us by. I think we've come a long way and improved in most respects, but sometimes I wish for a slower paced world.
