Default Trailer Brakes

Hi guys I am looking at buying a trailer that will have trailer brakes .My truck is an f150 Ford with the trailer package on it. Is there something else i will have to add to my truck for these breaks or will they just run off my light connection? Thanks

Unless it is a new f-150 with a brake controller factory installed, you will need one of those.

They are a small unit (about the same size as a radar detector) that hardwires in and allows you to adjust brake intensity for the specific trailer.

It doesn't have a factory installed controller so you will have to have one installed. You should have a wiring harness for it in the glove box. If not they are very inexpensive. You can install it yourself its not too difficult or a rv dealer can install when you buy your trailer for a very reasonable cost.

Default In case you don't have the harness

I tried to buy the harness when I added controller to my old 3/4 ton...I was amazed at what they wanted for a specially molded piece of plastic with some wires sticking out of it (more money than the controller if I recall correctly)

If you don't have the harness or can't find it, you might want to check with a local auto wrecker. It's common that trucks are built with the prewiring under the dash and the harness in the glove box and no controller ever installed...it will surely be cheaper than from a dealer.
