Can anyone shed any light on a first time recurve user to get a guy started in the right direction?

Hey there, practice practice practice. Check out Traditional Archery in Fort Sask if you are in that area. Very good place to go. I believe they are still there. its been a few years... Get good equipment and you won't regret it and have fun. Start off with lighter poundage bow until your comfortable shooting and then go up from there. I startrd shooting 50lbs @28" years ago now I;m shooting 70#. Good luck and have fun. Drop me a line here anytime if you'd like.

There are some good books and videos out there to get you started.

Traditional Bowhunting for Whitetails by Brian J. Sorrells is a good read if you plan to bowhunt. He has a good program to start builidng up your shooting.

The gist of it is to start with a draw weight you can handle and shoot at a target that is very close until you are proficient (500+ arrows inside a 2 inch circle). then move back a few feet and repeat.

The important part is to have gear that is decently tuned before you begin.

Try your local sources first for gear as you'll pick up lots of good info from them.

Where are you located ? I is best to have someone help you set up your gear and get you off on the right foot .
Keep the draw weight low untill you learn to shoot, and don't be afraid to seek help if it becomes difficult or frustrating.
You may find some usefull information on my site, www.peteward.com
Just shout if I can help.

Pete
