I have only had a 35 Whelen, and not for long either. However I really liked it and would get one again in a heartbeat. Both would be desirable in my books.

Well, I would go with the Whelen and have 2 of them currently. Both similar price to load for (unless you want head stamped 338-06 brass which is only available through Weatherby.). You certainly can use 30-06 brass for both but I do use head stamped Whelen brass as you can usually find it around and not really any more expensive than 30-06 brass. Your 338 will have better sectional density bullets but I am really not too concerned with penetration problems with a Whelen... I hunt with 225 gr Barnes and this year was full pass through on my cow elk; rib, lungs, ribs, lots of blood.... You also tend to have a few more bullet options with the 338 but don't have the option of loading pistol bullets which can be fun for plinking. There is a fair amount of factory loads for the Whelen unlike the 338. The superformance 200 gr load for the Whelen really does launch at 2900+ fps! Bottom line is that they are really very similar and either will do the job. For me I built my first Whelen on a savage action and it shoots great. My other Whelen is a Rem 7600 synthetic carbine (18.5 inch barrel). Great little gun but have not hunted with it yet. Good luck with whichever you decide to go with

I have both. I would be very difficult to choose just one but if I reeeeallly had to it would be the .338-06 due to it's greater versatility. Either one will handle anything I choose to hunt and both are very easy to load for and either is inherently accurate.

Between the two, I think I would take the 35 Whelen, but as both of these are Med bores on the 3006 case, you should have, the 9.3x62 in the mix as well, This would be my pick, and I do have a very nice husky, that hums along quite well, with a 250gr accubonds.
depends what you are trying to do, do you have a fast 30 cal.
seen as your name is FPS plus, pick the fasted one,
If you might travel outside of Canada/USA, then only the 9.3x62 is common in other areas. ie Europe and Africa, Australia etc.
I do have to wonder if sum bullet choices in the 338, might be a bit tough at reduced speeds of the 338-06, as that bore size, has sum real big fat cases, pushing at good speeds, ie the wby and lapua,

Tough Choices ! I have a cple of 9.3x62's as well . Definitely a fine cartridge but I find it's in a league of it's own. Both it and the .35 Wai run so close I shoot only 286 gr and up in the 9.3 and 250's in the Whelen,. The .338-06 gets a diet of 185 -225's. I guess that's why I have all three ... I can't give them up. lol Couldn't go wrong with any of them as an "only one gun" thing IMHO
