35 whelen hunting loads
Those of you that hunt with the 35 whelen what are you shooting? I just picked one up and am thinking a 225 gr accu bond or 225 tsx. Seems like RL15 is the go to powder.

I load 250's using Varget as a propellent and 158's using 700x. I don't see the point in shooting a 35 Whelen with 225's. If I want to shoot lighter bullets (with the exceptionof the pistol bullets) I'll shoot a smaller caliber. Leeper

I use IMR 4064 with a 200 gr TSX and crimped the bullets. So far it has elk, moose, buffalo, quite a few bears and a couple deer. Very under-rated cartridge. It took me 27 different loads before I could get it to shoot but then I sent it back to get the trigger done, seated the bullets deeper and crimped them , then it shot

53 grains Varget under 250 grain Hornady Spire Point, Remington brass, win Lg rifle primer. This load in my Ruger M77RS prints .79" @ 100 yards. This was shot with a 3x fixed Leupold scope.

I shoot 225 TSX and RL15. It shoots very well and kills real good. I'm very happy with the combination for bears. Lots of penetration and stopping power.
PM me if you're interested in the load.

I used to use 250g Speer HotCors, with about all the RL15 I could fit in the case. Killed elk dead! I did see a one jacket seperation, but still had complete penetration on a 5x5 bull. It's a very underrated cartridge. I don't see the need for premiums in this guy other then if you want lead free only.

How much are you looking to spend on glass? Illuminated or not?
Did you change the bolt handle? Doesn't look like a normal winchester bolt handle.

I wouldNT mind a lighted reticle like the leupold vx r. I'm thinking max 8 or 9 power. I have a 1x4vx 2 I might throw on but I'd like a bit more magnificaction than 4x.
The bolt is stock might just be the picture angle. I picked it up used from cgn. Dennis Sorenson did the re barrel job.

That Winchester has been around.
That's a nice setup.
You'll like the Whelen.
I think I'm on my 4th Whelen,...not that there was anything wrong with the first three...:-)...it's a gun nut thing.
I'm shooting the 225 TSX over a max load of Rel 15...but, the Federal 225 Trophy Bonded Bear Claws shoot just as well and just as fast at over 2700 from my 23" barrel.
My oldest son has a Whelen and we've shot 225 Accubonds thru them also.
I'm running a 2.5-8X Leupold on mine.

Push a tight fitting patch thru the bore, mark your cleaning rod and measure how far it moves to rotate 360 degrees.

Thought about that but didn't know if it would work. Thanks as always haha. I might have to start paying you for all the constant advice.
