Whats your opinions on the 35 whelen? Anyone hunt with one? If you do what are your thoughts?

A local guide took one to Africa, for a cat hunt.
The load he'd worked up for it seemed to yield quite a lot of recoil, at least it did in his plastic-stocked rifle.

Some time back I missed a big white-tail buck and worked the bolt action too slow to get a second shot. A while later I was following a wounded black bear into a black spruce jungle with a bolt action in my hands.
Well I decided I needed a "fast second" shot kind of a rifle. I started looking at Rem. pump and semiauto 30/06 rifles. Then Rem anounced the production of their 7600 in .35 whelen. I had to have one.
My wife bought me one for Christmas. I sighted in with Rem. factory 250 bullets and away I went. Shot a mule deer buck (took a couple shots to finnish him) Shot a big B&C white-tail buck (took several shots to bring him down) Shot a white-tail doe (took a coulpe shots to do her in)
I believe the 250 grain bullets from Rem. are fairly "stout' and do not open up and transpher energy well to deer size critters.
Maybe I will try the factory 200 grain bullets or do some handloading for it.

Maybe loading a soft-nosed 200 and pushing it along at slower speeds?

I think it's the catz azz for elk and moose, can you say kerplunk. I took a nice 5x5 elk at around 250yds with a 250g Hotcor, it looked like somebody pushed a 2" pipe right thru him. Tracking wasn't an issue, although he went about 90yds. Mine's a 7600, and yeah recoil is up there with max loads in 250g, but that's to be expected when your hot on the heels of a 338. And for what its worth my T3 in 338 has way more recoil. If your shooting inside 300yds there really isn't anything it can't do. I'm not sure about ammo availability, but I think you should really reload for it anyway.

That is a nice setup guidehunt. How hard does it kick? Worked up any loads for it or do you buy off the shelf?
Its either a trip to the states with the proper paperwork or a long wait with a smith/store.

Just think of a 30-06 shooting a sledgehammer.I have the Rem 700 CDL in 35.Whelen and shoot a 200 gr Barnes Triple Shock and eveything it has touched has died.3 bear,1 deer,1 elk and a coyote. It hits with force but not on the shoulder with the R3 recoild pad on it,I feel it is like my 25-06 that doesn't have a recoil pad, love my gun.

I bought the CDL as soon as I saw it, but quickly dumped the crappy factory walnut. Dropped it into an H-S stock and it shoots beautiful cloverleafs out to 200 with the 200gr factory loads.
The recoil was quite noticable with the original stock, but became quite insignificant with the H-S stock. So far, nothing has made it more than a couple of paces from where it was hit. Great gun for anything within 300, but if you know your range and drop, the bullet still carries a big thump for anything further. My 35 makes me think seriously about a 375 Whelen.

Great caliber! I have one of the Ruger 77 tang safety models, open sights, 21 inch barrel. I find it highly satisfactory when shooting Rem factory loads, both 200 and 250 gr. It does thump a bit on the shoulder but I mitigated that by installing a Limbsaver pad. (Mind you, I did have surgery on my shooting shoulder a few years ago which has left it a mite tender) Fairly comfortable to shoot now though.
This past fall, I shot my mulie doe at 200 yards, bang/flop, into my freezer she went.
Ammo can be a challenge to find on occasion so I am gearing up to reload. If I was only going to own one rifle/caliber, this would be it.
