Default 30-06 or 7mm-08 or ?

Hey everyone,

I’m in the market for a new rifle. I am purchasing a Tikka but unsure of what caliber or cartridge to get. I want something fairly fast and flat with decent energy down range. Not interested in a magnum. I’m on the fence between a 3006 and a 7mm-08. It’s not a recoil issue as I’ve owned and shot magnums in the past. It’s mainly for whitetail. Average shot between 200-350 yards. However, this will be my primary hunting rifle so it will be used for when I am drawn for moose and elk and don’t want to be under gunned (is 7mm-08 big enough). I’m not an expert on ballistics or anything in that regard. Looking for opinions on which way to go. Narrowed it down between 3006 and 7mm-08 unless someone can change my mind - will be factory ammo.

Thanks in advance.

Definitely 30-06 if factory ammo.

Get a 270 Win, compares favorably to the 7-08 but uses the full action length of the Tikka. Shooting 130's and 140's it will be a bit faster than the 7-08.
Have a long action receiver?...may as well have a long action round.
More factory ammo options in 270 Win as well.

Ok, now let’s say I’m handloading as I do have access to reloading equipment. Does that change the suggestion?

Default vote for 30-06

I vote for the 30 cal of 1906. 270 is too new-fangled and unproven.....bwaahaha.
Lower recoil is the only reason I could think of for you to choose 7mm-08.

Rembo got it right, 270 Win for the T3. 6.5x55 would also be a decent one if you reload, but I'd probably stick with the 270.

I love the 30-06, but I’d take the 7-08 (or 6.5CM) 10 out of 10 times. More enjoyable to practice with, which leads to higher proficiency. And proficiency is far more important than more ‘power’.

9.3x62! If Moose & Elk a .366 bullet in a necked-up 30-06 case gives you some real punch with reasonable recoil. Very popular in Europe.

For deer only I'd also throw the 25-06 in the mix.

If you are sticking with factory then the venerable 30/06 ..... or 270, simply because they will both work and you can find ammo pretty much anywhere. If you reload, under the circumstances you describe then with quality bullets the 7-08 would be my choice

I jumped into the rifle sports by teaming up with a 30/06,,, beautiful rifle fore sure,,, then I took on a 308,,, actually 2 of them,,, I get to reap the rewards of good times with both of them...

Now I'm test driving a 6.5 A-square thanks to Cat's idea of having one back in the day...

It really boils down to what you'ld like to use I guess,,, yes,,, the Ought-6 has a bit more jam then the 7mm-8,,, how much more is listed in the load data books...

More down range Punch-Junk sometimes relates to more recoil,,, less recoil of the 7 adds to the pleasures of shooting it,,, kinda like a win win...

I enjoy reading this info as it kinda gives me ideas of what I'm looking for and hopefully what to expect...

I take some of it for what it reads,,, some of it for what I know works for me... The 50/50 thing...

Click on the cartridge research,,, select a caliber,,, scroll the page to a cartridge of Intrest and enjoy the read...

https://www.ballisticstudies.com/

Only you will know what your next iron will be...

Cheers 👍

There's nothing amazing about either choice. Both are very good cartridges.

The 30-06 wins this one based on the OP using factory ammo. If the OP was a handloader and wanted an ultralight rifle, then the 7-08 would be the obvious choice.

If you shoot a .270, after about ten rounds you start feeling kind of funny...by 20 rounds, you stop to pee and realize you've turned into a girl!

It takes a good 50 or 60 rounds of .30-06, or maybe about 10 rounds of .375 H&H before your 'boy bits' grow back.

A 7mm-08 is fine up until puberty; after that I think you could get in trouble for messing with underage guns or something....kind of like those 'wizzums' and 'Rums' and such. It just ain't natural.

If you're looking to shoot out to 300 yards or so, a .308 win is more than sufficient. And if you're able to reload, Sierra makes a wonderful 180g round nose that is perfect for elk or moose.

For deer, a 150g Sierra gk is excellent. But don't forget the 165g Sierra gk.

I'm kind of partial to the .308 and Sierra bullets.

That in mind, a 9.3x62 or a 6.5x55 in a Tikka would be nice as well. Something about shooting a European cartridge out of a European rifle.

...

Dang, now I gotta go shopping

Short action rounds chambered in long actions are super lame IMO. Another vote for the 30-06 or .270. If the rifle came in a short action and you reloaded I'd just say flip a coin.

I've never been able to tell the difference in terms of recoil between the .270win and the 30-06. I've also never seen any real difference on the other end, the animals die about same. The one thing that cant be disputed is that the .270 does shoot a bit flatter, for me its a non issue but if I anticipated 250-300 yard shots on a regular basis I'd be pretty inclined to favor the.270.

So the story goes....we all know that's simply impossible as this cartridge is not capeable on large game.......

To the OP....both great cartridges but I would if had to go with the 06.....one gun/cartridge best all around do all get it dun for the planet....except alien invasions.....

Thank you to everyone for the feedback. It is greatly appreciated. Looks like I’ll be getting a Tikka in 30-06.

That’s easily disproved if that’s the whole statement. It’s all boils down to which load your shooting in either rifle. Drop is a product of velocity and time, for us it boils down to initial velocity and BC.

The .270 shoots a 150 grain at the same velocity as a 30-06 shoots a 180
The .270 shoots a 140 the same as a ‘06 shoots a 165
A 130 grain from a 24” barreled .270 gives you about 3150 FPS. My 24” barreled 30-06 spits a 130 Barnes at 3430 FPS.

So real world, a ‘06 with a 165 grain at 3k FPS drops less then a .270 shooting a 150 grain at 2850 FPS. However you could say a 130 from your .270 drops less then a 180 from my 30-06.

Most .270’s are sporting a 22” barrel and those numbers change significantly. I’ve owned and loaded for both and the 22” barreled .270 doesn’t keep up with those numbers.

OP.

Between your two choices, if your not recoil sensitive I would suggest the 30-06.

Consider the 7mm. Same recoil as 30-06. More gun imo. Your mileage may vary.

Default Rifle purchase

Looks like you need two rifles--Well maybe three---Moose,elk,caribou-The hard hitting 30-06--300m-7mm. Deer, sheep, goats, antelope, rifle range--6.5cm or equivalent.yotes 22-250.OK four,a good semi--31/2 chamber--snipe to geese.Oh yes five--a good quality 22lr for the gopher days---Now you are rdy to go hunting.

If you have an elk or deer at 100-300 yards away do you think it’ll care what it gets hit with? Nope pick one and love it I’d go 7mm all the way the 06 is Boring lol

They are both solid platforms
