Default Hunting Technicalities

What's the scoop on hunting Upland Birds with a 22WMR or one of the 17s? I have always used a .22LR on ruffies in the bush. I have seen the regs that state a 22LR may be used on upland game birds, but I don't recall ever finding anything in regard to the other rimfires. I have been debating a new plinker and both the 22WM and 17 HMR have caught my interest, however, if I can't use either legally on uplands, I'll go for a new 22LR.

Anyone out there know the details?

Wow no need to use expensive ammo like a HMR or a WMR on ruffies. If you looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle ok but I would just spring for a new 22LR or a 17HM2.

Heck if you wanted to head shoot em with you big game rifle it's still legal.
Only fly I see is the violent expansion of the 17HMR bullets may transfer some blood shot into the breasts.

Still looking for the answer regarding the legality of 22WM or 17HMR for use on uplands. The 22WM and 17HMR are appealing for additional uses. Still only intended for a headshot.

I couldn't get an answer from F&W. The last person I spoke with in the local F&W office had no idea a 22LR was a legal firearm.

Any firearm, be it a rimfire, centerfire or matchlock are legal for upland hunting, as is a slingshot, pellet gun or thrown rock.

I know Manitoba has rules against rimfires for upland hunting, and it is clearly stated that it is illegal, here in Alberta no prohibitions or the like are listed, therefore it can be conscrewed it is legal.
Call one of the F&W district offices and get the skinny from a F&W Officer.
Although it will only be their interpertation of the law 9 times out of 10 on this sort of black and white issue it's as good as the written law.
Call 310-0000, then dial 780-542-6616, ask for Officer Anderson, or Lyons.
They are the F&W Officers here in DV.
Those two will give you the straight skinny.
