The stock design on the SPR with such a drop at the comb, looks like it'll pack a bit of a wallop.
If you're able to put the money into a TC, you could easily buy a full size stock to replace the one you had cut.

Roger,
The single shot I have is a Browning 1885 High Wall in 270 win
I do like the ruger, but I'm hoping to hold them all within the next couple of months to see what they are really like. My bro's say go with the TC
I really like the ruger #1 International also
I see Dick and Rob M have the NEF's for their kids.

I found 2 of these for my kids this week here in Alberta. $903 (including tax) for 2. Once they prove that they will stick to hunting and shooting, I will upgrade the optics. But for an initial investment, I don't think they can be beat for value. If I recall correctly, it is relatively easy, to install another barrel in a heavier caliber, on a Savage.

Now there is a plan. Good thinking.
Wrong about the barrels though, still need to have a barrel threaded, chambered, crowned, and still need specialized tools to install or remove them, also need to address headspece. The only thing the Savage barrel saves you is the troubles with moving a prominant shoulder to acheive headspeace.

Actually, I was lead to believe the 7X57 Int'l at dick's was house originally supposd to be for THEM, not some ol' packrat that seems to make off with stuff in the night!!
I love single shots for a kid's first gun - heck, they are my forst choice anytime!

Dick,
If you order through MidwayUSA (i use Dave Henry to do this) you can quite easily get a pre-threaded,pre chambered savage tube in the neighborhood of 200 bucks. The tools are also available from dave, though i had him do the swap for me. All in, you can do it for under 300, which is still cheaper than a new barrel for a T/C

And the headspacing issue?
The rest is good to know, about barrels from Midway and Dave Henry, etc.

savageshooters.com has an article about setting head spacing, you need to use your head and be careful, but definetly a homer-able job.

according to dave henry, setting the headspace can be acieved by a homer by A, ordering applicable gauges for about 40 bucks, and keeping your swaps in the family (ie, 243,260.7-08,308,338 fed, 358 Win) Or you diassemble the bolt and get the ejector plunger out, then put a cigarette paper between the case head and bolt face, and chamber a FL sized brass (no live rounds, obviously) hand tighten barrel to round, then tighten barrel nut. Re insert ejector and go shooting.
This is how i understand it is done, but do not take my word as THE awnser.

Barrel swap on a savage takes about 5 minutes or less, a little longer if you are going to a different bolt head size.
You need a barrel wrench, headspace guages, and a screw driver.
