Default how you spend your cash

not wanting to hijack another thread any further, im proposing an interesting theory.
great uncle Gabby Johnson from Rock Ridge passes away and leaves you some money....and stipulates the money HAS to be spent on firearms and there is no cash settlement...
If you HAD to spend say...$5000 on a centerfire rifle(s) and your using it (or them) for whatever blows your hair back...what would you prefer to do?

aim for as many different bargain basement specials as possible?
or budget to build one higher end unit with benchrest style actions, big glass etc,..., or try and get one from each basic caliber 223, a 270 and 338 for example.

RULES:
-lets not count ammo or reloading equipment, but gun(s) must be ready to shoot, peeps, scoped, bipods, rings/ bases, etc.
- your mythical quest must be new or over-the-counter type, (custom built stuff built from unobtainium and used prices are just too subjective)
-lets not count shotguns, rimfires, rocklocks, tasers

for me Id prefer one gun as opposed to a few
probably a weatherby or BAT action, titanium pin, jewel trigger, carbon fiber ultralite stock, zeiss/ swaro 30 mm tubed glass, conetrol rings, after market barrel in 257STW, fully bedded floated and worshiped.
so i guess that would be fairly close to the $5G mark

Can't do it - mainly because I'd likely sell it next year!

Okay here goes:

.17 HMR in a Savage or Marlin

458 Lott in a Ruger Mark II

340 WBY in an Accumark

270 WSM in a Vanguard Sub MOA

Should be able to work a deal with the gun dealer to put those all in the safe for $5000. Optics etc can come latter.

My choice would be.
One custom made gun that obviously was made fo me. I would want a stoch fitter involved and everything.

Or I could get a middle of the road trap gun.

Doubt it!!
My Rizzini that I just ordered isa good compromise however,.
6.5X55 O/U, with a set of 20 guage barrels.

The Tikka I now own is another gun that I could hunt anywhere with - 12 guage barrels with a set of 28 guage tubes, and 9.3X74R barrels.
The 9.3 will go 200 yards no sweat, which is a decent distance for the areas I like to hunt.

These two guns are well made, ( although I have not received the Rizzini, Ii've shot one of their guns a few years back and their rep is good) but to buy the Tikka these days you would be shelling out a fair chunk of cash, as it has a very good set of QD scope mounts, top quality scope, fitted hard case, etc.

The Pedersoli SXS doubles can get pricey, and although they are nice, they ain't no Merkel or Kreigoff!!

This is a dilemma, for sure.....

My custom Remington 700 brought me to $3000 for the barrel, receiver, bolt and stock.

$150 Harris bipod
$1700 Scope
$150 Jewell trigger as the custom wasn't as good.

excellent machine youve got there mr wolves...
way to go 'unregistered user' from balzac...your a fan of Mel Brooks...he actually says 'reverend' in authentic frontier jibberish.
'the sheriff is n-e-a-r'
truly a classic
... anywho...
its kind of interesting how we spend money on guns/life..from the answers above it appears that most would have one gun that is of 'higher' value, than a group of guns of 'consumer grade'. quality over quantity.

except for John who obviously has a lot of gopher problems ,

that is true, if the are 10g's its hardly something that would be drug around the bush in november
but most folk would revel in a fine tuned custom made, given the choice, but the $5000 limit i suggested allows for one gun (like yours) or a few shelf guns with moderate optics.
yet it seems that most will spend $1000 four times, spend hours, more money, more time and gas to the range trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear.
but spending $4000 once seems unfathomable.
makes you wonder

Reverand? really? link please. My take on this is some guys like tinkering to feel they have actual input. Like hot-rodders who often delude thamselves on the power gain. Tim the toolman Taylor wannabes who would be dollars ahead to hire a pro but there's something about doing it yourself. Wildcatters? come on. But the world would be a boring place if we all shot custom built 98s in 30-06.

blaser with a 2.5-10x50 30mm tube swaro scope in lets say 7 mag or maybe 270 wthby or win and i would eventually end up with a 220 swift barrell and a 257 of sorts and then maybe a bigger barrell down the road

I would buy a Tikko T3 Hunter with the Wood and Stainless Barrel with a leupold VX-III in 4-16. Caliber would be 270 wsm or 300 wsm. So what would this be 1700?

Varmint gun would be a 204 Remington 700 SPS topped with a Bushnell 3200 5-15 so 1000 all topped out?

I would use the rest to buy a Ruger 10/22 then buy a Yildiz 20 gauge O/U and a Benelli SuperNova. That should be under th 5K mark and cover everything.

Default Many guns

I would be looking for quantity over quality myself... Not that I would buy crappy guns with the money but I do have 2 young boys that I would like to have guns for so for myself I would be looking at

Marlin 45/70
Weatherby in a .308
a 300 wsm or maybe a 338??
a .17 HRM (I know no rimfires,but I REALLY want one)

For the boys
a 243
a 7mm-08
maybe a 25-06 to get them started.

I know you said no rimfires or shotguns but a .22 for each of the boys, and I would like a Over/Under.

Maybe I can find an Uncle to leave me 10 grand for guns???

i need an uncle like that, and he should die at least monthly.

I would end up with a custom wildcat on a fairly common, but worked over action. Caliber would depend on my mood that day. (my mood has been swinging between 6.5-06 and 458 lott these days) it would be built for quality, function and accuracy, with classic looks being of little concern, although an "ugly" rifle would not make the grade.

Quality over quantity, thats quite a dilemma, see if I spent 5 grand on one gun it might be nice but then I have the darned thing burnt out in a year. I like to shoot lots and would find it very boring shooting the same old gun every week. I like to take a half dozen guns to the range and play with them, constantly trying different bullets, powders etc working up loads, then soon as I find a load that works, I abandon it to my records and start on some other combination. The next weekend I'll take another batch of guns to the range, keeps things intersting. I have a gun or two that fits the quality aspect but they are boring, I don't have to tinker with them and what fun is that. I've cooked the barrels off a few guns and hope to fry many more. A couple or three good guns just don't do it for me, I like all kinds of guns and sitting at the bench tinkering to see how small that thing will group, then when I got those groups as small as they'll get.... I try to improve them I'd go crazy if I only had 1 gun.

There are way too many calibers I want to own too think about one or two rifles, so I think I would be buying more "economy rifles". A few years later, if I found I didn't use a couple of them, sell them off and invest in a "custom" in the caliber that I used the most.

I'm thinking:
.223
6mm
.270WSM
.338
.45-70
