Exclamation Handgun Bans Don't Work

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police are holding their annual conference in Calgary. They are on record as saying handgun bans don't work, and don't support any further laws.

To quote from the article:

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police won't be supporting a call for a ban on handguns despite concerns about gun violence in a number of major cities including Toronto.

Vancouver police Chief Adam Palmer, who heads the organization, says Canada already has strong firearms regulations and no other law is required.

Palmer says in the majority of cases involving gun violence, the handguns being used are already illegal and it makes no sense to ban something that is already prohibited.

"In every single case there are already offences for that. They're already breaking the law and the criminal law in Canada addresses all of those circumstances," Palmer said Wednesday at the conclusion of the association's annual conference.

"The firearms laws in Canada are actually very good right now. They're very strict."

There will always be an influx of guns from the United States into Canada.

- Vancouver police Chief Adam Palmer

Palmer suggested that handguns would still be around, even with a ban, because of Canada's proximity to the United States.

"People can't be naive to the realities of how it works with organized crime and smuggling," he said.

"There will always be an influx of guns from the United States into Canada," said Palmer. "Heroin is illegal in Canada, too, but we have heroin in Canada.

Trudope doesn't care, he will make a gun ban an election issue. Stupid people will vote for that. Sad state Canada is in.

Exactly right. Liberals are clearly keen to continue using this as a wedge issue.

Whoever is sent out to seize all the handguns better have stock in printer ink for all the warrants to search and seize, and damn good metal detectors.

I gave up a prohibited handgun once, to Milarm. Never again.

Time to bury a couple thousand soup cans around the yard.

Its reassuring to me to hear that the police don't want a police state.

Its disheartening when certain politicians do. Its also a massive red flag.

Yes because taking guns away from law abiding citizens will cure Toronto's gang wars. Stupid people actually believe that.

He has nothing else to campaign on. He is grabbing anything that can make him look good in the eyes of the potential Lieberal voter.
But nothing will save him in October...

Banning handguns is ONLY effective for law abiders/those who don't have
a thing for shooting people. Here is yet another example.

--

North Philly standoff’s alleged cop shooter, Maurice Hill, has a long criminal history

"...Hill also spent time in federal prison. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to federal firearms violations
after he was caught with a Smith & Wesson .357 and later a Taurus PT .45 semiautomatic.
His prior felony convictions should have barred him from owning those weapons.
U.S. District Judge Paul S. Diamond sentenced him to four years and seven months in prison."

You know, I'm actually pleasantly surprised at least the police commissioners and chiefs are still using common sense. Refreshing to see pragmatic thought process applied every once in a while.

Unfortunately, like most have mentioned, that same common sense and pragmatic thinking escapes our elected leadership.
