I feel the 7mm-08 is an excellent choice for recoil sensitive shooters. I’ve got one in a kimber sitting in my safe that the wife uses. It’s sporting a vx3 2.5-8x36 now in Talley rings.

From other information shared in about 500 other threads, this does seem to be factual. Unless I have misunderstood there are a few here that compare the recoil of the 7mm-08 to be equal to that of a 30-06. Seems odd but to each there own i suppose

You are confused. He talking about the 7mm RM, this is not a youth thread, and you can’t get my name right.

Well, for goodness sakes, its a thread comparing a 7mm-08 with a 30-06! If one was going to go of in a completely different direction not relevant to the ops question at all. Why would you not say 7mm Rem Mag instead of just typing 7mm. I guess its not what you think id figger you’d understand what I think I thought I ment to generically imply. Here I thought he was just nuts! You can call me xbolt6.5CM if it makes you feel better Char&*%. Thanks for the clarification though I do appreciate it, I actually am familiar with both of those, just not the 7mm-8, I have never shot a factory round from my 7mmRM but it is running kinda hot so I cant really compare factory to factory but my 7mm RM boots more that the 30-06 with my rounds for sure and the 28 N seems to boot more than the 7mmRM,,,pretty sure one of those fancy charts should show up soon tho. To the OP, my opinion on the matter is if it was strictly a deer rifle I would get the 7mm-08, I like the 30’s for elk or moose. Lots will say the 7mm-08 is good for moose and Elk, they may be right, I just like the 30 cals for the bigger critters and grain em up above where you can go with the 7mm-08 on the shelf

So...... you don’t know where the term 06’ comes from?

I’ll educate you, it came from the year 1906, the year the thirty odd six was developed.

Hope that lets a little air out.

I’m well aware of what ‘06 is. The pronunciation and spelling is aught or ought not “odd”. There’s a few things that ARE odd in this conversation but not the pronunciation of a grand old cartridge.

I’ve heard the older fellas call the 308 a thirty aught eight. Truth be known guys calling it a thirty odd six or a thirty aught six are both right just like someone saying pass me my clip/mag. Everyone knows what they mean life’s to short to get bent out of shape over the use of it either way.

Holy Cr@p, that's 15 minutes I'll never get back. Someone mentioned a train wreck I believe a few posts back, I concur. Tried to stop reading, but just couldn't.

To the OP, buy whatever makes you happy. Reload or factory, no matter. 7mm-08 is available in lots of factory offerings now, so unless you run out of ammo up in Bumrun, AB and need to, for some reason, buy a box from Bumrun Joe at the corner store, you'll find plenty of factory fodder for the chambering, and lots of premium bullet offerings. You MAY only have 2 shelves of ammo to choose from, rather than the 4 shelves of 30-06. Someone way back when mentioned the .280 Rem, it makes a nice compromise. You get the BC of the .284, but in a .30-06 wrapper .

Most importantly to me, is to buy a rifle that fits properly. I made the mistake of buying a Browning A-Bolt .300 Win Mag as my first hunting rifle. Got a good deal on it, it was a gorgeous rifle, and I was off to the races. The only issue was it didn't fit me well, and after sighting in the scope at the range, and every range session after that where I shot more that 8 or 10 rounds, my shoulder went all purple and eventually yellow for a good week following. Not to mention, the muscle felt a bit tenderized on the drive home, sort of like that jittery muscle feeling you get after a heavy work out session where you overdid it, but localized to just one shoulder and pec, lol. Not fun, and I unfortunately developed a flinch that to this day I still battle. Sorry, a bit of a tangent there, you did say recoil wasn't an issue for you. For those that it is a factor for, which have seemed to pop up in the thread, it was a real eye opener for me to get a bit informed on recoil, namely recoil velocity vs. recoil energy. Think 7mm Rem Mag vs .45-70.

For knock down power, I have a hard time thinking of anything in a .277, .284 or 30 cal that won't kill anything in AB.

If this is the only two choices for a one gun safe the 30-06 would be a wise choice due the vast number of available factory rounds out here.
you could shoot everything from mice to moose.

Well hey. We never even talked best scopes for an odd six. Circa 50's Weaver would have been a great match. Max 2.5x magnification.

A pair of suspenders, Fudd hat, tartan pattern thermos ....you're woods ready now.

You really should know better...
Them deer will not step out of the bush unless your wearing $4,000 dollars worth of the latest camo pattern. Your rifle is equipped with the latest and greatest. laser guided, range finder, super zapper telescope, made more for observing far away galaxies then hunting and all your scopes settings are made instantaneously, all through your new cell phone. For that once in a lifetime shoot at 100 yards

Don't even get me started on the boots.

I'm NOT big on the NIKON scopes so i would have put a Leo 4.5 -14 VX111 I with 30 MM -CDS and side Focus - Still Lighter then the Nikon and i think a better Scope !
BUT you did get the Rifle Cartridge right and the Rings

Cheers RJ

To save all the fuss, why not get a 6.5x55 SE and do it all without any pain ... or regret.
