It doesn't matter where on global earth it is from. A spike buck is a spike buck. Sure, some are larger than others but....my buddy telling me that this is a mature buck is like saying that Chinese kid over there is old and mature. Or that black kid is old, or that white kid is old. A kid is a kid is a kid, no matter where your are from.
just to make my opinion more clear!!!! i was talking about the body!!!!! in the antler world anything is possible!!!!

Well let's forget anyone said anything about the body size. That isn't what the OP was about anyway.

Besides, it is mostly irrelevant. Big bodied or small bodied he looks like a 1 1/2 year old to me.

That is what you asked for, opinions?

the buck in the pic is clearly a baby. does anyone remember the spike in north american whitetail mag a few years back that was aged at 5 1/2? 10 inch spike with 5 1/2 inch bases. it happens....just not this time. im not positive, but i think it was the same issue that had a 6 point (total) that made P&Y at 128 net.

To answer the question, is it possible,

I for one, did not see the North American Whitetail story. But clearly it is possible.

I hear ya -that's what I'm saying! I tired to explain that to him but his rebuttal is that you have to be a scientist to really know the age. I explained that I'm not interested in the birth date, just generally how old the deers is.

if he realizes you need to be a biologist to tell age, then why the heck is he so insistant that this deer is 4.5 years old. Is he just feeling ashamed that he killed a younger deer? Denial? IMO the chances are so extremely low that this deer is anything but a 1.5 year old that it boggles my mind that he is saying that crap. Sure you can have old deer with spikes, but as evident in the picture, those deer have HUGE spikes. There is nothing wrong with killing the buck your buddy did. Heck, he will be tasty. Body size will vary even at that age, but the picture clearly shows a younger deer body with a bit of a swelled up neck from the rut.
